A fundraiser for a ‘selfless’ police officer who was struck by a train while saving a ‘distressed’ man on a railway line has raised more than £49,000.

The officer who hasn’t been named is thought to be a sergeant and was left critically hurt following the incident in Balderton, Nottinghamshire, on Thursday night.

He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a ‘serious’ condition. The man saved by the officer was also taken to hospital after suffering non-life threatening electrocution injuries.

A former policeman Dan Fletcher, who lives just a mile from the scene, said the officer had paid the ‘heaviest burden’ for his courageous act.

Mr Fletcher has setup a JustGiving page, which says: ‘This is an appeal to the community in order to assist the injured police officer and his family following a terrible ordeal whereby he has sustained life-altering injuries in the line of duty whilst saving the life of another individual.

Over 2,500 supporters have donated to the fund, which currently stands at £49,735

‘This is the epitome of policing bravery. The long term outcome for the officer and his family and rehabilitation moving forward is going to be difficult and challenging. This fund will hopefully assist in many areas of their lives which they will now have to adapt and adjust considerably.

‘Please help us help this brave selfless officer and his family. Give what you can.’

Over 2,500 supporters have donated to the fund, which currently stands at £49,735 – almost hitting the target of £50,000.

Messages left by wellwishers hailed it ‘an incredible act of selfless bravery’.

Mr Fletcher said: ‘Being ex-job, and an ex-sergeant like him, and with it happening less than a mile from my back garden, I felt compelled to do something.

‘My initial thought was in providing any specialist adapted vehicle that he and his family might require.

‘But, speaking to former colleagues, it seems he may be in hospital for some time, so the money will help ease the financial burden during his rehabilitation.’

Nottingham Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: ‘This is a truly devastating incident that has left one of our officers very poorly in hospital.

‘We are supporting his family and ensuring that he gets all the care and support he needs.

‘This was also extremely traumatic for all those who attended the scene, some of whom provided immediate medical assistance while the ambulance was on its way.

‘I would like to personally thank them for their quick and dedicated response to this incident.

‘Officers and police staff put themselves in danger every day to keep the public safe and from harm and I personally want to say how eternally grateful and proud I am of them all.’
