Israeli tourists who ‘gang raped’ Brit, 20, in Ayia Napa jailed for eight days while police probe horror hotel attack | The Sun

FIVE tourists who allegedly gang-raped a British woman in the party resort of Ayia Napa have been jailed for eight days.

The victim, 20, told cops in Cyprus she was attacked at the hotel she was staying at on Sunday afternoon.

Cops arrested five men from Israel after the tourist from the UK reported the alleged incident.

Three of the suspects are understood to be 19, and the other two aged 20.

They appeared in court in the city of Famagusta this morning.

Court officials told The Sun that all five Israelis had were ordered to be detained in custody while cops probe the alleged attack.

A source said: "The judge ordered they be held in custody for eight day when they are expected to appear in court again once authorities have had the time to continue their investigation."

The alleged victim – described by police sources as being "very distressed" – did not appear in court.

After appearing before the magistrate, the five men were taken into custody in Paralimni where they will remain until next Tuesday.

They denied the charges in court.

The Israeli men were arrested on the day the nation’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, arrived for a high-profile two-day visit to Cyprus with wife Sara.

A Cyprus source told The Sun: “The nationality of the accused has provoked a degree of sensitivity from authorities – and the timing could not be worse.

“Netanyahu arrived on Sunday as the woman was accusing five Israelis of rape.”

Netanyahu was welcomed by the Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides the pair were joined by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, today.

It comes after a British holidaymaker was thrown in jail after she was accused of making up rape claims.

The then 18-year-old from Derbyshire flew out to Ayia Napa for a summer of fun after finishing her A levels in 2019.

During her stay, she struck up a holiday romance with a 21-year-old Israeli lad.

But when they were together in his hotel room one night that July, she claimed a group of his friends forced their way in and took turns raping her.

The alleged victim, who cannot be named in the UK for legal reasons, reported the assault to police, and 12 Israelis were later arrested – who all maintained it was consensual.

But the ordeal took a turn when, after eight hours of being quizzed by cops and being denied a lawyer, the teen was branded a liar.

Police dictated a statement retracting her story – ordering her to sign it as her alleged attackers went free.

Charged with causing public mischief, the youngster was then thrown into a cockroach-infested jail for five weeks, followed by a series of court appearances.

After not being believed by the judge, she was in handed a four-month suspended sentence in January 2020, finally allowing her to leave the island after almost six months.
