A POSSIBLE bomb scare at Los Angeles International Airport has prompted shut downs and traffic delays as police surround the departures level.
A suspicious vehicle prompted parts of LAX to close to traffic at around 4.30pm local time as the LAPD bomb squad responds to the scene.
The latest tweet update from LAX, which was sent out just before 6pm local time, says that officials are in the process of clearing the suspicious vehicle.
"Vehicle traffic into the airport is very heavy so please allow extra time to get here tonight. Check your flight status as some flights may be delayed as well," the tweet from LAX reads.
Passengers who need to access the Tom Bradley terminal and don't need to drop a bag or use a ticket counter can proceed to security in terminals four and 5.
The airport's official Twitter account also said that traffic is heavily impacted in and around the airport as the upper departure level of the airport remains closed.
"All vehicle traffic into the airport is impacted due to the police investigation, including Century and Sepulveda.
"Shuttles are not currently running, including from economy parking.
"Please allow extra time and check your flight status. We will provide updates as available."
LAX officials said via Twitter that the investigation is ongoing and to stay away from the Tom Bradley International Terminal for the time being.
"Passengers can continue to access the departures area in most locations, but vehicle traffic is being diverted around the police activity to the lower level only," another tweet from the airport states.
Reports from passengers at LAX indicate that a Uhaul truck is reportedly under investigation.
Video footage taken at the airport shows hoards of passengers evacuating the terminal.
According to the LAX website, more than a dozen flights are currently delayed through the evening.
