Lorry veers off road killing six people at neighbourhood BBQ

Six people have died and seven others were left injured after a lorry ploughed into a neighbourhood barbecue.

The shocking incident happened just outside the Dutch city of Rotterdam in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland at around 7pm yesterday.

Police are investigating what caused the lorry driver to career down the small hill and into the family event.

Pictures from the scene show an HGV from a Spanish transport company between a hedgerow.

Other images show a smashed up table and police officers patrolling the area after the crash.

Rotterdam Police posted on its Twitter page: ‘The cargo truck drove into a group of people while they were at a neighbourhood barbecue.

‘There are several dead and several others have been taken to the hospital.’

The driver is currently in a state of shock and is being interrogated by the police about the crash.

According to De Telegraaf, the neighbours were hosting an annual party when the lorry hit them.

A large number of ambulances attended the scene and several trauma helicopters were also deployed.

A crane is due to remove the lorry from the crash site.

Police are acting on the assumption the crash was an accident but investigations are ongoing.

It comes just a day after a van driver ploughed into a crowded cafe terrace in Brussels, Belgium, injuring six people.
