The military is helping WA Police to identify a mystery object which washed ashore on a remote beach north of Jurien Bay on Saturday.

The two-metre metal cylinder, rusted and covered in barnacles, was found by locals in Green Head, Western Australia, before authorities were notified and cordoned the area off to investigate.

The military has been called in to help identify the mystery object.

A WA Police spokeswoman said the authority was working with multiple state and federal agencies to determine the object’s origin and nature.

“The investigation is ongoing, and until further information is available, we urge everyone to refrain from drawing conclusions,” she said.

“At this early stage it appears the object did not originate from a commercial aircraft.

“In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation, officers from the Western Australia Police Force are currently guarding the object.”

The spokeswoman said cordoning off the area was to preserve any potential evidence and facilitate further expert examination.

“The object is being treated as hazardous, until the origin of it can be established,” she said.

“The Western Australia Police Force is committed to maintaining open lines of communication and will provide updates as soon as significant developments arise.”
