Moment ‘idiot’ motorist holds on to an unsecured mattress on his car roof while driving
- The car and mattress was filmed driving along the Eastern Road in Portsmouth
- Police confirmed they are looking into the incident following complaints
A driver was pictured speeding along a road with one hand stuck out of the window so he could hold on to a mattress on his roof.
People filming the fool from a car following for several miles on to a motorway have now handed the video clip to the police.
The car was filmed driving on the busy Eastern Road in Portsmouth, Hampshire just before 2pm on Sunday, and led on to the crowded M27.
It was captured on camera by a stunned passenger in another car which was travelling behind and slowly overtook the ‘mattress’ car’.
The motorist was filmed with a mattress on the roof of his Mercedes E-Class estate approaching the M27 in Portsmouth, Hampshire
The driver had attached a couple of orange straps to the mattress and passed them through the car’s roof rails
The un-named passenger branded the driving as ‘reckless’ and said if the driver had to brake sharply, he would have lost control and there could have been a pile-up with people killed.

He said the ‘prime idiot’ drove from the Chichester direction on to the M27.
The car was a Mercedes with a large mattress – which would fit a double bed – perilously planted on the roof.
In the video the Mercedes driver is seen with one hand on the steering wheel and the other stuck out the window, holding the mattress on the roof.
The person who filmed it said ‘Talk about Sunday drivers.
‘Check out this prime idiot caught on the Eastern Road coming into Portsmouth from as far back as Chichester.
‘I spotted him on the M27 at 1.50pm and shot this video.
‘This is an example of reckless driving. He has been reported to police.’
A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said ‘On Sunday, 13 August, officers received a report of a car driving along Eastern Road with an insecure load on its roof. Officers are looking into the matter.’
