Mother says her asthmatic three-year-old son is left struggling to breathe due to mould in their council flat

A single mother-of-two has told how her asthmatic son is struggling to breathe because of being forced to live in a mould-ridden council flat.
Lexi Bullock, 27, from Blackpool, Lancashire, moved into the three-bedroom terraced house in November 2021 but within six weeks of living there, her son Brody, three, was given oxygen in hospital.
She said the mould was only in one room in the property when she moved in but now over a year later, it has spread to every room in her home.
The 27-year-old said she is that worried about her son’s health because of the damp, and she sits outside of his room ‘panicking’ that she can’t hear him breathe.
Lexi said: ‘I’m sick of tired of going to bed at night and listening outside my son’s bedroom.

‘As soon as I can’t hear him breathe, I’m stood there shaking and go running into his room.
‘Because he’s got asthma I can usually hear him breathing and sometimes when he rolls, over I can’t hear him as much so I stop panicking.
‘He’s been in hospital that many times now because he can’t breathe and he’s just three years old.’
She said that she took Brody into a walk-in centre because he was ‘wheezy’, however, nurses suddenly came running in and put an oxygen mask on the young boy.
The single mother added: ‘They gave my daughter Ibuprofen and they were both really ill.
‘That was the first six weeks of us living here.’
After raising her concerns, Homequest, who manage the £495 per month property, installed new PVC windows and repaired the sky roof to try and fix the dampness.
But Lexi has said that this has not done enough and that she sometimes has to take Brody to her mother’s house at night so he can escape the mould.

The housekeeper said: ‘I’m sick of tired of having to wake up at two in the morning and take my little boy to my mum’s house and then come back to my daughter.
‘My sister has to get up and sit with her while I take him to my mum’s.
‘I’m just sick of it – I just want better for him.

Lexi is also mother to Casey, five, who suffers from asthma and is concerned about her health as every morning she wakes up ‘coughing for around half an hour.’
She said: ‘I’ve got asthma and I was in hospital just before Christmas with flu and I’ve never been the same since to be honest.
‘I wake up every morning coughing for around half an hour before I can actually do anything.
‘I wake the kids up most mornings just coughing and choking most mornings.
‘I just wish I hadn’t brought my kids here in the first place but then how was I supposed to know this was going to happen?’
Lexi said the mould is in every room in the three-bedroom house but it is worse in the playroom and in Brody’s bedroom.
She has said her children cannot play in the playroom anymore because of the mould but she has said it was ‘awful’ telling her son because ‘he doesn’t get it.’

Brody previously had an Avengers headrest, however, they had to throw it out after it was found covered in mould
The distraught mother said: ‘It’s awful telling your three-year-old that he can’t go in the room where all of his toys are because he doesn’t get it.
‘I have to tell him to get his toy out of there and come and take it in another room.
‘The mould is all down the back of his bed and everything but when I moved in, there was no mould in any of the bedrooms.’
She said that Brody previously had an Avengers headrest that he took ‘everywhere with him’, however, after it had been left at the back of his bed for a week and a half it was covered in mould.
Lexi said: ‘It cost me £18, he had it four weeks and then it was gone.’
