Mum, 22 and ex-boyfriend, 18, charged over 'murder' of baby boy Elijah Shemwell | The Sun

THE teenage ex-partner of a mum whose baby boy died in the Derbyshire town of Belper has been charged with his murder.

Police were called to an address in Acorn Drive just before 10.50pm on January 2, 2022 following a report that a young baby was in cardiac arrest.

Elijah, who was four months old, was taken to hospital by ambulance but died on January 5.

Today, the Crown Prosecution Service has agreed the following charges for both Carl Alesbrook and Elijah’s mother India Shemwell, who were in a relationship at the time of Elijah’s death.

Carl Alesbrook, 18, of Matlock has been charged with Elijah's murder as well as inflicting Grievous Bodily Harm to the toddler.

India Shemwell, 22, of Derby, has been charged with cruelty to a person under 16.

Shemwell has been released on police bail – while Alesbrook has been remanded in police custody.

He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
