New rumours Prince William is planning a sponsored fun run in America after royal makes unusual trademark request
- The future King submitted an application to the US Patent and Trademark Office
- It requests to use the trademark for ‘printed matter, banners and posters’
Prince William has prompted speculation he may be planning to host a charity fun run in America after applying for a trademark which includes an usual request for ‘printed race numbers’.
The future King, a keen runner who enjoyed an early morning jog in Central Park during his recent visit to New York to promote his Earthshot Prize, submitted an application to the US Patent and Trademark Office on May 12 this year to trademark ‘The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales.’
The charity, led by William and wife Catherine, ‘mobilizes leaders, businesses and people so that together we can address society’s greatest challenges,’ according to its website.
The US trademark application, which list the Foundation’s address as ‘Kensington Palace, London’, seeks to trademark the Foundation’s name for ‘promotional campaigning, charitable fundraising, educational activities and healthcare services relating to mental health.’
Intriguingly, it requests to use the trademark for ‘printed matter, banners and posters….in relation to charitable activities in the field of mental health; printed race numbers, clothing, footwear, headgear.’

A lawyer familiar with trademark applications said: ‘It is most unusual to see ‘printed race numbers’ specifically singled out.
‘Normally the language is fairly broad and all-encompassing but for this application to mention race bibs in particular might suggest they are thinking about hosting some sort of race or fun run here in the States?’
The Foundation had a previous trademark application under the name The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate’s titles before the Queen’s death.
But that trademark made no mention of printed running bibs.
William, 41, was voted the most popular royal in America in a recent Gallup poll.
The heir to the throne had a favorability rating of 60 per cent, ahead of King Charles at 46 per cent.
His two-day trip to New York last month (Sept) was viewed as a triumph with thousands of Americans lining up to see him at various public events which included a visit to an oyster farm and a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Former New York mayor, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, said: ‘The prince has clearly won over Americans of all stripes. These days, as we know, that is no small feat.’

The poll ranked William as America’s most favoured public figure, placing him way ahead of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
William was ‘liked and trusted’ by 60 per cent of Democrats and the same per centage of Republicans.
Mr Bloomberg said: ‘America has not seen that kind of bipartisan consensus since 1776 (American independence from Britain). But this time we’re all drinking to the King’s health.’
William and Kate are both said to be keen runners.
In 2017, Kate joined joggers representing Heads Together, the mental health initiative spearheaded by the Royal Foundation, who were training for the London Marathon.
