Northolt incident: Five people trapped in lift shaft as two taken to hospital with back and neck injuries | The Sun

FIVE people were trapped in a lift shaft in a horror incident at a HS2 contstruction site that left two people hospitalised.

Cops and emergency services rushed to Mandeville Road in Northolt, London, at around 10:13am today to rescue the workers.

Cops confirmed that five people were rescued out of the lift shaft at 11am.

Two men were taken to hospital with injuries to their back and neck – their condition is currently unknown.

And the Metropolitan Police confirmed that others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Officers are supporting the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service while they respond and a number of roads have been closed.

One local posted a photo of an air ambulance landing in Mandevilla Park on social media.

They tweeted: "Air ambulance just landed at Mandevilla Park and many more police and emergency crew out there in Northolt."

HS2 has confirmed that an incident took place this morning at approximately 10.30am at its construction site in Northolt.

The firm says a small group of operatives, supporting construction of the Mandeville Road vent shaft, were treated for minor cuts and bruising by paramedics.

An HS2 spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the individuals involved in the incident this morning, and we thank the ambulance service and the police for their assistance and support.

“We are working with our construction partner and the relevant authorities to understand the cause of the incident.

"All construction work at the site has stopped and a thorough investigation will be carried out.”

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman told The Sun: "Police were called by the London Fire Brigade at 10:13hrs on Saturday, 26 August to reports of five people trapped in a lift shaft at a construction site in Mandeville Road, Northolt.

"Officers are supporting the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service while they respond and a number of roads have been closed.

"The five people were brought out of the lift shaft at approximately 11:00hrs.

"Two  men were taken to hospital with injuries to his back and neck. We await an update on their condition.

"The others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. All five had been working at the site.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been informed."
