Over 10million patriotic Brits to take to streets today to celebrate the coronation | The Sun

TEN MILLION patriotic Brits will take to the streets today to celebrate the Coronation in one of the largest community get-togethers in history.

An estimated 40,000 Sunday lunch street parties are set to flood streets with a sea of Union Jack bunting and millions of paper plates.

Parties will today stretch across five continents – with celebratory gatherings taking place as far west as Canada and as far east as Hong Kong.

Community events will also mark the occasion for expat communities in South Africa, Australia, Bangladesh and France.

The annual Big Lunch celebration usually takes place in the first week of June but was brought forward this year to mark King Charles’ Coronation.

A total of 67,000 Big Lunch events were registered with organisers from the educational charity the Eden Project, taking place over the bank holiday weekend.

Some 10 million Brits – one in seven of the UK population – are set to attend community street parties, including members of the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit a Big Lunch in Cranleigh, Surrey, whilst Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie will dine with royal fans in Windsor.

Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Tim Laurence will also join a lunch in Swindon.

The Princess Royal, 72, will then also spend Monday volunteering as part of sister movement The Big Help Out.

Six in ten street parties will happen today as a prelude to the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle tonight.

Organisers say the events will bring “neighbours and communities together to share friendship, food and fun”.

The Coronation quiche has been personally chosen as the designated dish for the Big Lunch by the King and Queen.

Royal chef Mark Flanagan was responsible for creating the recipe for the egg-based spinach-laced tart.

But organisers have also provided hosts with a series of alternative menu ideas including a Asian-style rack of lamb and vegetarian Coronation aubergine.

Lunches and street parties are part of the official coronation celebrations and thousands of events are open to the general public – inviting anyone to come and join.

Since 2009 over one million Big Lunch street events have taken place.
Queen Camilla became a patron of the charity in 2013.

Last year more than 17,000 Big Lunches took place to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee – with a quarter of the UK’s population attending, raising a total of £22 million for charity.

Lindsey Brummitt, Programme Director at the Coronation Big Lunch, said: “With tens of thousands of Coronation Big Lunches taking place in villages, towns and cities UK-wide, it’s clear that community spirit is alive and well.

“Millions of people coming together, in places stretching from a youth centre celebration in Shetland, all the way down to an island tea party in St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly, marks a moment in history with the positive impact of sparking community spirit and new connections, which we hope will have a lasting legacy for years to come.”
