The family of a young girl who died suddenly in a school playground have paid tribute to their ‘bright and beautiful’ daughter.

Neve Parlett, 11, collapsed and died at Didcot Girls School in Oxfordshire on the morning of 11 March, 2021.

Mary Parlett had dropped the year seven pupil off for just her second day back at the school after lockdown, but received a phone call at 12:20pm.

Two years later, her mother shared the moment when she found out her daughter had tragically died.

‘We were only told the very bare minimum. They just said she had collapsed in the playground. We just thought she had fallen’, Mrs Parlett explained, according to The Sun.

Mary Parlett had dropped the year seven pupil off for just her second day back at the school after lockdown, but received a phone call at 12:20pm

‘I said I would just come to the school because it’s only round the corner, but they said they would send the police escort. That’s when I started panicking.

‘When they arrived, I asked if they had any more information and they said that she had gone into cardiac arrest. It was out of the blue. I was in absolute shock.’

After meeting her husband Paul at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, the pair were told she had an inoperable brain aneurysm.

They were informed there was nothing doctors could do for their daughter.

Mr Parlett stated: ‘They were in tears, and we were in tears. It made us realise they were human as well.

‘It was very peaceful. She just slipped away, and it was just like she was asleep. We just couldn’t get our heads round it. We felt any minute she would wake up.

WHAT IS A BRAIN ANEURYSM?

A brain aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning blood vessel.

This can leak, causing bleeding in the brain, which can be life threatening.

Symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm include:

  • Sudden, severe headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stiff neck
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Seizure
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Confusion
  • Loss of consciousness

An unruptured aneurysm may not have any symptoms and could not require treatment.

The causes of brain aneurysms are often unclear.

Risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, heavy drinking and old age.

Treatment may include surgery or medication to restore blood flow and relieve pain.

On the second anniversary of Neve’s death last week, her family planted a pear tree, apple tree and primroses in her memory.

Didcot Girls School has also built a memorial garden for Neve.

Vicky Lay, a friend of Mary and Paul, is also running the London Marathon in memory of their daughter.

She has set up a Just Giving page, which has already raised nearly £2,000, and reads: ‘Neve collapsed at school and never regained consciousness.

‘She was a bright, vivacious, beautiful 11 year old girl who loved singing, books and her dogs (fur babies), but most of all her family and friends.

‘She was loved beyond words and is missed immeasurably by so many.’
