He has found fame playing a young Prince Harry in The Crown, but Will Powell endured an extraordinary drama of his own as an infant.

The 13-year-old Netflix star was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of just 21 months and battled the disease for three years until he was given the all-clear.

His father Andy said: ‘Throughout everything, he was a superstar – our little boy never complained once.’

He has found fame playing a young Prince Harry in The Crown, but Will Powell endured an extraordinary drama of his own as an infant

The family said they have never forgotten the excellent care Will received and remain lifelong supporters of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he was treated. He had to cope with chemotherapy and had 27 operations before beating blood cancer. He is filming the sixth series of The Crown.

For his parents Andy and Michelle Emerson the joy of seeing their son land the TV role is in stark contrast to their emotions when the shadow of leukaemia hung over them for so long.

After the toddler was diagnosed in 2011 he required daily chemotherapy which his parents administered at home for the next three-and-a-half years.

The boy also had multiple operations as he battled to overcome the blood cancer and finally entered remission in July 2014.
