With British summer well underway and the sun creeping back out, many will be searching for ways to stay cool.
Temperatures are expected to climb above 25C, which will be the first time the UK has seen such highs since early last month.
But while Brits prepare for a break from the wettest July on record, many will be attempting to get used to the soaring temperatures.
Luckily, a TikToker has figured out a simple blind trick to keep your house cool in summer – and the method has baffled users who ‘can’t believe’ they never thought of it.
A TikToker has revealed why blinds turn both ways and how turning them up could keep your room up to 8C cooler in summer
The content creator tested the method in a usually sweltering room in his house – only to find it much cooler when he returned
TikToker, @djlostone, shared his useful discovery with over 1.9 million followers, captioning the video: ‘How did I not know this.’
Revealing the quick trick, the content creator said: ‘You ever notice those aluminum blinds in your house, the ones that go up or down? There is an actual reason for that.
‘You’re supposed to turn your blinds ‘up’ during summer for a cooler room.
‘During the summertime, you’re supposed to move it up… that is so that it can direct the warm light from the sun up, causing a room to be up to eight degrees cooler.’
Putting the method to the test, he turned the blinds up in a usually sweltering room, only to find it was eight degrees cooler when he next stepped in.
Clarifying what he meant by ‘turning the blinds up’, he said ‘the rounded part of the blinds need to be up.’
Experts at Budget Blinds have backed the TikTok hack, they said: ‘Turning the blinds up will naturally direct the airflow behind the blinds towards the ceiling.

‘Since heat rises, this is a great option for summer, keeping the space cooler towards the floor.’
Since it was posted, the video has gained over 144,000 likes and has received thousands of comments from unbeknownst followers.
One user wrote: ‘I learn so much here,’ while another said: ‘Imma try it.’
Others added: ‘It also helps it make the room a bit darker than the other way around.’
While some pointed out it’s harder for people to take a look inside that way. One said: ‘I use them like that anyways so it’s harder to peek inside.’
Another agreed: ‘I keep ’em that way because it prevents peeping toms too!!’
