PM gets a boost as polls show Tories clawing back ground on Labour

Rishi Sunak gets a boost before Tory conference as polls show Conservatives clawing back ground on Labour following Net Zero U-turn – while PM’s personal ratings also rise

Rishi Sunak has been handed a boost before the Tories’ annual conference this weekend as two polls showed the party clawing back ground on Labour.

The latest Deltapoll research showed the Conservatives 16 points behind Sir Keir Starmer’s party, which is eight points closer than 10 days ago.

And a separate Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey put the Tories 15 points behind Labour – a three-point improvement from last week.

The same poll also showed an uptick in Mr Sunak’s personal ratings, although he still lags behind Sir Keir over who voters believe would be the better PM.

The polling gap between the two main parties remains enough to deliver a big majority in the House of Commons for Sir Keir.

But the slight improvement in Tory fortunes could be seized on by Conservatives as a sign things are starting to shift.

The PM last week announced a watering down of Net Zero measures, including a delay to the ban on new diesel and petrol cars, as he drew an electoral dividing line with Labour.

There are also claims that Mr Sunak is considering an inheritance tax cut and a shake-up of A-level education in new pledges.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir has faced fresh scrutiny over his stance on Brexit after he was caught on camera admitting Labour ‘don’t want to diverge’ from EU rules.
