Private girls' school redesigns garden after being shaped like 'penis'

Can you tell what’s wrong with this garden? Prestigious $39,450-a-year girls school’s alarm over new sandstone feature with a VERY rude design

  • PLC Sydney redesigned garden bed
  • Principal admitted it had a ‘phallic’ shape

A prestigious private girls’ school had to redesign a garden bed after students noticed it was built strikingly similar to the shape of a penis.

The garden in an outdoor thoroughfare at Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Croydon, in Sydney’s inner west, was designed by architecture firm NBRS.

It wasn’t until a drone was sent up to film the new upgrades to the campus that a former student noticed the unusual shape.

The school’s headmaster Paul Burgis said a staff member had also given ‘feedback’ after noticing the garden’s outline.

‘The garden is part of a range of architect-driven updates to parts of the school,’ he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

‘After they designed the garden the architects requested the inclusion of some chairs.

‘As part of recording the updates we sent a drone up to take pictures. At a certain angle from up high, the garden with its room for chairs took on a phallic shape which was unintended and unexpected.

‘As a result, the architects made some alterations which were completed within 72 hours of the drone pictures.’

One former student said photos of the garden had circulated online with many poking fun at the design in the form of memes.

‘It was unmistakably shaped like a penis and testicles,’ she said.

‘The immediate response was laughter: “You’ve got to be kidding me”.’

Annual school fees at PLC Sydney for Year 11 and 12 students set parents back $39,450.

NBRS has been contacted for comment.

The college has become the latest high-profile Presbyterian school to come under the spotlight this year.

The Presbyterian Church was called out in April after claiming gay students should not be allowed to become school captains.

The Presbyterian Church has over 500 congregations across Australia and runs more than 20 schools and pre-schools, including prestigious private schools in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The church made the extraordinary demand in a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission.
