A pro-Palestine protestor has been left in critical condition after setting themselves on fire outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta.
The city’s police chief, Darin Schierbaum, described the incident as an ‘extreme act of political protest’, and said a Palestinian flag was recovered from the scene.
It comes just hours after Israel’s military wing IDF announced the re-launch of its offensive against Hamas in Gaza after a six-day ceasefire expired.
At least two people were injured in the act of self-immolation, including a security guard who attempted to intervene.
The security guard’s condition is unclear, and officials said the protestor is in critical condition.

A backpack and burned items were captured on camera outside of the building and shared on social media.
Everyone inside the building is safe, police said, adding that there’s no apparent threat.
Anat Sultan-Dadon, consul general of Israel to the southeastern U.S., said in a statement: ‘We are saddened to learn of the self-immolation at the entrance to the office building.
‘It is tragic to see the hate and incitement toward Israel expressed in such a horrific way.
The sanctity of life is our highest value. Our prayers are with the security officer who was injured while trying to prevent this tragic act.
‘We are grateful to the city of Atlanta’s law enforcement and first responders for all they do to ensure safety.’
