Pub forced to close car park after parents fill it during school run

You’re barred! Pub forced to block off car park after parents dump their motors there during the school run

  • Manager Louis Hunt said trade was down on afternoons because of school rush

A pub has been forced to block off its car park to stop parents from using it on the school run.

Bosses at the boozer slammed mums and dads who can’t be ‘bothered’ to look for someone else to leave their vehicles.

Manager Louis Hunt said he doesn’t mind the car park being used in the mornings when the Tynewydd Inn is closed.

But he has brought in the ban on the afternoons when he needs the space for customers.

The pub, located in Barry, South Wales, where the sitcom Gavin and Stacey was based, is opposite St Helen’s Catholic Primary School on Maes-Y-Cwm Street.

Pub manager Louis Hunt said he had no choice but to make the decision as the school rush was damaging his afternoon trade

At 3pm when the children finish, Louis puts green cones across the entrance to stop parents from parking there.

He said it was because the pub was losing trade in the afternoons.

On the first day of the school term he turned away as many as 21 cars.

Mr Hunt said: ‘Unfortunately, due to the parents that can’t listen, we as a community pub have decided this is the only way forward to keep our customers happy.

‘And so that they can get into our car park and park, as that’s what it’s used for – not a stopping point for parents who can’t be bothered to look elsewhere.’

He added: ‘The car park is free to use in the mornings for all parents, as the pub doesn’t open until 12, and we are happy to let you use this.

‘So please take into consideration that the pub is trading at 3pm, so look elsewhere for a parking space to pick up your children.’

Local Maria Eyre said: ‘Well done. I wish I could do this outside my house.’

Ryan Button added: ‘Think you’re going about it the wrong way personally [sic].

‘I’d sit on a chair and charge the parents £1 per car for drop offs.’

One mother from the school, Danielle Couch excepted the pub’s decision as ‘totally fair enough’.

She added: ‘Thanks for letting us use it in the morning, that’s very kind.’

Andrew Wells said: ‘Very community minded that.’

Ann Jones added: ‘Well done you but sad you have to do this.’
