Pub landlords' fury as 'diner' leaves one-star review on closed day

Pub landlords’ fury as ‘diner’ leaves one-star review moaning of hair in the food, long waiting times and being denied a refund – on a day the kitchen wasn’t even open

  • Marquis of Granby, in Penkhull, is at the centre of the one-star review nightmare

A pub has received a one-star Google food review and wants it removed because it was made on a day when the kitchen was not open.

The reviewer compiled a catalogue of complaints about their apparent visit to The Marquis of Granby, in Penkhull, on July 22.

Gripes include the food allegedly taking too long to arrive, claims of a hair in the food, and a refusal to refund the cost of the meal.

But the St Thomas Place pub, run by couple Kieran and Calumn Bloor, has revealed that its kitchen has actually been closed since July 19 due to the lack of a chef.

It raises the possibility that the reviewer went to a pub with the same name but posted their review under the Penkhull one.

The venue said: ‘You have got the wrong Marquis of Granby. We are not currently serving food so we are confused as to why we are receiving this review.

We would appreciate this being taken down as this isn’t our pub that you have eaten at and this could have a damaging effect on our business.’

Things have got so serious after the review The Marquis of Granby highlighted the issue on its Facebook page.

The St Thomas Place pub, run by couple Kieran and Calumn Bloor, revealed its kitchen has actually been closed since July 19 due to the lack of a chef

In a social media response to the review, the venue said: ‘Our kitchen has been closed since July 19 due to us lacking a chef.

‘We have tried reporting this review to Google with no joy. But why do people feel the need to try to ruin someone’s business by giving a highly-detailed lie? It’s uncalled for.

‘To target our staff is very unfair as we have a very friendly and dedicated team working for us who have done so for a long time and myself and Calum are extremely proud of them. Team Marquis all the way – one person’s bitterness won’t dull our shine.

‘Our food, on the other hand, will start up again when we find a suitable chef to join our great team in our great pub.’
