A Nashville news reporter has described how her mother-in-law was working on the front desk of Covenant School when the shooter opened fire on Monday morning.
Hannah McDonald, a reporter for NewsChannel 5 Nashville, went on air this afternoon to convey her mother-in-law’s experience in the school.
‘She was outside of the school and she heard gunshots, she had just gotten back from her break,’ said McDonald on air.
She said her husband’s mother worked on the front desk at the Covenant School, an elementary school in the outskirts of Nashville.
Six people – including three children – were killed after a 28-year-old woman opened fire at the private school.

McDonald said that her husband’s father worked on the front desk at the Covenant School, an elementary school on the outskirts of the city that was targeted by a female shooter on Monday
McDonald’s husband, Alex Apple, posted on Twitter confirming that his mother had been present at the time of the shooting.
‘This one hits close to home,’ he said of the shooting. ‘My mom has worked at The Covenant School for nearly two decades. Even my prayers feel inadequate right now.’
‘She is the one that sits at the front desk,’ she added. ‘The front door is actually on the side of the building and that’s where she sits.
‘She was at the school this morning, however [she] was able to come out of this safe. She actually stepped away to take a break. And that is why right now I’m torn.’
McDonald said that her mother-in-law had been at the school from early in the day, and before the shooting which took place at around 10am.
‘She starts her day earlier, this is an elementary school, people are there at 7am to great these children. She got back and she heard gunshots,’ she said.
Police say the shooter – who has not yet been named – killed three kids and three adults before being shot dead by police. Her identity has not yet been confirmed, but police have said she is 28-years-old.
‘We do not know who she is. She does appear to be in her teens,’ Don Aarons, the spokesman for Nashville Metropolitan Police said at a press conference on Monday.

‘It is a strange situation to be in right now,’ she said. ‘I cannot believe that this school, a year ago, did that training. I was there, and here they are now, about thirteen months later, putting this into practice.’
Shortly before 10.13am, the shooter entered the school through a side door and began opening fire on the second floor.
Police arrived at the scene and heard the gunshots coming from the 2nd floor. By 10.27am, she had been shot dead. She was armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun.
Parents have been told to collect their children from a nearby church, but no other information has been given.
‘I know this is probably the worst day of everyone’s lives.
‘I can’t tell you how sympathetic we are,’ a Metro Police officer was heard telling the parents as they waited at a nearby church for updates.
Neighbors of the school watched as parents frantically rushed to the scene to find their children.
First Lady Jill Biden, speaking at the National League of Cities conference on Monday, told the crowd: ‘We just learned about another shooting in Tennessee – a school shooting.
‘I am truly without words. Our children deserve better. We stand with Nashville in prayer.’
Monday’s shooting is the 129th mass shooting this year.
