An SNP minister in Nicola Sturgeon’s Government got involved in a foul-mouthed 1am bust-up with another party members at a boozy ‘drag bingo’ event at an Aberdeen nightclub – just hours before the Scottish First Minister delivered her keynote conference speech.

Mental Wellbeing Minister Kevin Stewart, 54, was reportedly on the dancefloor at a party in Cheerz nightclub organised by the SNP’s LGBTQ+ wing Out for Independence when the row broke out on Monday morning.

One witness to the confrontation said that there had been ‘a lot of finger wagging’ and ‘yelling’, with the man involved heard shouting towards the Nationalist politician: ‘Are we in Birmingham? Are we Tories now?’.

The MSP for Aberdeen Central was reportedly then spotted gesturing towards the SNP member and using foul language before he left Cheerz alongside a bouncer after the incident.

The other man involved in the disagreement remained in the bar for at least another hour after Mr Stewart left.

Mr Stewart denied that his conduct was the cause of the screaming match, and insisted he got into the argument because of the ‘behaviours’ of others. The Government minister also claimed to have ‘left out of choice’ when asked about his late-night bust up.

‘There wasn’t a fight, there was an argument – I wasn’t happy with some of the behaviours on display,’ he said.

The SNP last night remained tight lipped about whether any formal complaints had been made about the incident.

A senior Government official said that he was not aware of any complaints having been made about Mr Stewart’s conduct.

According to a councillor in attendance, Mr Stewart was late to the event and forced to do push ups as a ‘forfeit’.

A dismayed SNP councillor who watched the altercation said it was ’embarrassing’ to see a government minister involved in the public spat.

A member of party staff who was at the club said Mr Stewart’s conduct was ‘unacceptable’.

The 54-year-old was elected to Holyrood in 2011, having been a councillor in Aberdeen for the previous 12 years.

Miss Sturgeon appointed him as her local government, housing and planning minister in 2016 and he was moved into his current mental health role in May last year.

Just eight-and-a-half hours after the late night row, Mr Stewart was attending the P&J Live arena on the outskirts of the city to speak at a conference fringe event about bereavement.

At the talk hosted by the UK Commission on Bereavement, he appeared alongside Donald Macaskill – the chief executive of Scottish Care – and Ellie Wagstaff from the Marie Curie cancer charity, to discuss how to improve support for families dealing with loss.

Later that afternoon, he tweeted a photo of Miss Sturgeon’s keynote speech, quoting her as saying: ‘Let’s make Aberdeen the net zero capital of the world.’

This is not the first time that the SNP has been embroiled in accusations about the conduct of one of its politicians.

Earlier this year, a financial agreement was struck between the SNP and one of its Westminster employees after his harassment complaint about former party chief whip Patrick Grady was upheld.

A Westminster probe concluded that Mr Grady, the MP for Glasgow North, significantly breached the House of Commons’ sexual misconduct policy after making an ‘unwanted sexual advance’ towards a junior staff member.

He was accused of touching and stroking the neck, hair and back of a 19-year-old male party worker in 2016.

In August this year, Sky News reported claims from a former SNP staff member that the party has a ‘line of tolerance’ when it comes to complaints about sexual misconduct and what constitutes inappropriate behaviour.

The ex-employee said: ‘You’re allowed to pat someone on the bum, you’re maybe allowed to put your finger down someone’s neck, maybe you can kiss them without consent, but you’re not allowed to rape them.

‘And to me that is abhorrent and horrific, but it really does show the culture inside of Westminster … basically if it’s not rape it’s okay.’
