Software engineer dead after 'fall' in Russia ministry building

Mystery as software engineer, 42, is found dead with ‘head wounds’ after ‘fall at work’ in Russia’s foreign ministry building

  • A man reportedly named Mikhail Ukrainets was found dead at the ministry
  • It follows the death of a top Russian defence official yesterday in St Petersburg

An official at the Russian foreign ministry, aged 42, has been found dead at work in suspicious circumstances.

The diplomatic IT specialist had ‘fallen from a low height’ and suffered head wounds, according to reports.

The official’s family name was not confirmed but it is evidently similar to the word ‘Ukraine’.

One report said he was named Mikhail Ukrainets, aged 42.

His mysterious death comes amid the war unleashed by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine which has led to the deaths of a suspected 200,000-plus on both sides in almost one year.

The specialist was found ‘with no signs of life’ in the offices of the Russian foreign ministry, headed by veteran minister Sergei Lavrov, aged 72, a close ally of Putin’s.

Some reports said he had died of ‘heart failure’.

But ChK-OGPU Telegram channel said the elite software engineer had fallen from his own height.

Evidence showed ‘a blow to the head’ and that his death may have occurred over a period of four or five hours, it was claimed.

When emergency services arrived, it appeared the diplomatic employee had been dead for at least one hour.

It is unclear why a call was not made sooner.

In early January, there was an unexplained fire in a Foreign Ministry building adjacent to the main Stalin-era tower.

Two dozen officials were evacuated for their own safety.
