When nature calls, it appears us Britons can’t help but pick up our phones.
Nearly one in two people admit calling or texting while on the toilet.
The dirty habit is among the top three unsociable places we use the device, alongside while talking to loved ones or while on a night out.
Doctors have warned the unhealthy practice can not only increase the bacteria on phone screens but also increase the risk of haemorrhoids.
The poll of 2,000 people found 43 per cent used their phones when they went to the loo.

There was slightly more decorum among older generations however, with those over the age of 55 least likely to do so. Those aged 35 to 44 were the most likely.
The survey by Mobile Phones Direct also that one in ten people even risked taking their mobile phone into the shower – rising to a quarter for those in Generation Z.
It comes a week a YouGov poll looked at the use of phones on the toilets across the world. China found to have the highest number doing so by quite some margin, with 62 per cent saying they looked at their phone fairly or very often. Australia and Italy came in second and third place.
Health experts warn that taking your phone to the loo could then transfer bacteria to the phone, which can lead to illness if it gets into your body from your hands or touching your mouth.

One surgeon, Dr Karen Zaghiya, recently warned sitting on the toilet for long periods of time while looking at your phone could also lead to piles.
Martin Thorpe, head of networks at Mobile Phones Direct, said: ‘It’s not surprising that people can’t resist taking their phones along with them for even the most mundane tasks, but using your mobile while on the toilet is not a good idea for lots of reasons, including hygiene and the risk of dropping it.
‘Over the years mobile phones have become an essential part of everyday lives, but our survey has showed just how important they are to people now.
‘While it’s important for people to make sure they’re not missing out on key moments in life, these figures also serve to remind us that our phones don’t have to be there for every second, especially those best left private! ‘
