Trans activist who boasted of her violence is rejected by the WI

Trans activist who boasted of her violence and said on Twitter she had drawn up a ‘kill list’ of opponents of gender ideology is rejected by the Women’s Institute

  • The WI  publicly announced that it would have nothing to do with Shanu Varma
  • Claimed she signed up after activists revolted against it welcoming trans women
  • She warned on Twitter that she was drawing up a kill list of prominent ‘terfs’

A transgender activist who tried to join the Women’s Institute has been rejected over her violent threats.

Shanu Varma claimed she had signed up to the WI this week after activists launched a revolt against its policy of welcoming trans women as members.

But the organisation took the unprecedented step today of publicly announcing that it would have nothing to do with her, following outrage over her extreme online posts.

Ms Varma had warned on Twitter that she was drawing up a kill list of prominent opponents of gender ideology.

She had also boasted that she was a martial arts champion who had won hundreds of fights, had paralysed nine people and was ‘happy to be extremely sadistically violent’ to anyone who threatens her.

But the organisation took the unprecedented step today of publicly announcing that it would have nothing to do with her, following outrage over her extreme online posts

Ms Varma, who lives in Greater Manchester, later deleted dozens of messages and claimed the ‘snuff list’ had been a joke.

But now she has admitted the post had been ‘rather stupid’ and had meant ‘my Women’s Institute membership has been cancelled’.

Soon afterwards at least three of her Twitter accounts were removed completely.

And the WI, which had not mentioned this week’s controversy at all on social media, announced: ‘Thanks to all who notified us of concerns about someone who signed up as a WI supporter, which we took very seriously, investigated and reported immediately.’

It said that although signing up as a supporter did not confer membership rights, Ms Varma’s tweets ‘immediately breached our supporter Ts&Cs so this request to be a supporter was not accepted’.

The WI added: ‘We have a long history of respecting views and learning from each other, alongside clear standards and values that members and supporters must work within.

‘We welcome all women who want to learn more, share their experiences and views in a respectful way and be part of our wonderful movement.’

However, it faced fresh criticism from women who called on the organisation to ditch its policy that allows anyone ‘living as a woman’ to participate.

Writer Sonia Poulton, who reported Ms Varma to the police, warned the WI: ‘There is not an “all-woman” category unless you are born female. This will come back to haunt you as it has with other organisations.’

Ms Poulton gave a witness statement to Greater Manchester Police and assured other Twitter users: ‘I can tell you they are taking this seriously.’

Feminist campaigner Jean Hatchet, who won a libel case against Ms Varma in 2021, said: ‘Do I consider Shanu Varma actually dangerous? I do. I’m sick of being told this is a “culture war”. That makes it sound like we are throwing magazines at each other. It isn’t. It’s a war waged upon – predominantly – the female sex, by men, and because they are female.’

Greater Manchester Police did not respond to requests to comment.
