A Greggs in Perthshire was forced to close for three days after a squirrel became trapped inside the sausage roll store.

The ‘Greggs Squirrel’, as it has become known, was discovered in the bakery chain’s Atholl Road branch in Pitlochry on Saturday.

The creature was not captured until Tuesday evening, when it was freed into the nearby Faskally woods.

Social media users have wondered if it ‘went nuts’ being stuck inside the store for so long.

‘After giving us the run around, we managed to catch the Greggs Squirrel safe and sound,’ the bakery chain said

Greggs took to social media to share the news with followers, joking there had been a ‘new starter’ in the Pitlochry branch.

In a tweet, the bakery chain said: ‘Friendly locals offered their help to lure the Greggs Squirrel out.

‘But ultimately, if you were having a tasty sleepover in Greggs, would you leave? No, of course not.

Greggs posted a video of the squirrel’s release into nearby woods on social media

‘After giving us the run around, we managed to catch the Greggs Squirrel safe and sound. Thanks for the, er, enthusiastic first shift.

‘The Pitlochry shop is now closed for a deep clean and will reopen later this week, squirrel free (we hope).’

Staff at the branch even made the red squirrel its own name badge.

The firm posted a video of the squirrel’s release on social media.

Members of the public found the prospect hilarious, asking if the pesky animal ‘sent them nuts’ at the store.

Other wondered how much food the greedy creature had managed to get his paws on during its three days running loose in the shop.

‘Several pounds overweight I’m sure and a strange addiction to vegan sausage rolls,’ one imagined of the now-freed red squirrel.
