Double ovens have been an integral part of the family kitchen for years.

Now twin dishwashers are becoming middle England’s latest must-have trend.

Households with the budget and the space to fit two dishwashers in the kitchen increasingly view it as a valuable tech addition.

The demands of large families mean pots and pans can stack up with one standard dishwasher and a second is said to help declutter the kitchen – especially in open-plan designed homes.

According to one Yorkshire-based kitchen company, around 35 per cent of customers requested a double dishwasher – often either side of the sink – and some want three.

Richard Jewkes, managing director of KC Design House near Huddersfield, told the Sunday Times: ‘It isn’t an extravagance. It is a practical solution for busy family homes or even couples. We have five children and two dishwashers – this morning, my breakfast pots were going into the second dishwasher because the first one had already started the cycle.’

Estate agents dealing in the upper end of the market have also reported the trend for double dishwashers filtering down to the middle market.

Although many countries in western Europe have higher dishwasher ownership rates than the UK, the dishwasher industry is big business and growing.

The percentage of households in the UK with a dishwasher rose from 18 per cent in 1995 to 49 per cent in 2018.

Around 30 per cent of homes with one adult living there have a dishwasher comparted to 64 per cent with two adults and two children, according to research service Statista.

It estimated the UK dishwasher market in 2023 generated £613million in revenue.
