Shocking moment gang of men jump out of a BMW on the busy A55 through North Wales and launch attack on white van driver

  • Sean Powell was driving along the A55 in North Wales in September in his van
  • He was attacked by a group of men driving a BMW on the dual carriageway
  • The men blocked his van and started throwing objects at his small vehicle
  • Two men were jailed and the other two received suspended prison sentences

Dramatic video footage has captured the ‘astonishing’ moment a group in a BMW chase a van along the A55 before attacking the vehicle.

The group threw items at the van, blocked its path and even got out in the middle of the busy carriageway to kick the vehicle.

The shocking footage was played at Caernarfon Crown Court on Monday as the four men involved were sentenced in connection with the incident, which happened in September last year.

A judge called it a ‘prolonged, persistent and deliberate course of very bad driving’.

The court heard that BMW driver Ali Najam, 26, and his passengers Said Sadat, Pedro Bergantim and Demi Ward were in North Wales in early September.

They had an altercation with van driver Sean Powell, and claimed he had driven over the foot of one of the defendants.

The video, recorded by an unspecified person in a vehicle behind, shows the black BMW stopping on the westbound carriageway of the A55 four times.

The occupants throw items including a plastic water bottle and one carries a metal bar, while another kicks the van.

Eventually, Mr Powell drove off and left the A55 at the Black Cat roundabout near the Glan Conwy Corner.

The BMW was followed to the Great Orme and police arrested the driver and three passengers.

Najam, of Brinnington, Stockport, was jailed for 22 months for affray and 15 months concurrent for dangerous driving. Sadat, 23, of Oldham, was jailed for 18 months for affray. Bergantim, 22, of  Ashton under Lyne, and Demi Ward, 21, of Manchester, were given suspended sentences for affray.

On Monday, prosecutor Richard Edwards had said that the nature of the incident had been ‘terrifying’ for Mr Powell.

The judge His Honour Timothy Petts told the defendants it had been an ‘astonishing and appalling’ incident.
