THE GRISLY ax murder of Betty Gore shocked the nation at large and swept headlines, there was one suspect named in her killing.
Her neighbor, Candy Montgomery, was the prime suspect in the investigation and she was tried for Betty's murder.
Who is Candy Montgomery?
On June 13, 1980, elementary school teacher Betty Gore was found dead by her neighbors Lester Gaylor and Richard Parker.
Betty's body was found mutilated with 41 ax wounds and the murder weapon was found in the Texas home she shared with her husband and children.
The evidence of fingerprints and footprints found at the crime scene led to her other neighbor, Candy.
On June 27, 1980, Candy was arrested and charged with Betty's murder.

When Candy's trial commenced in October 1980, she confessed to killing Betty in self-defense.
As a result of learning about her husband Alan Gore's affair with Candy, the assailant alleged that it was Betty who attempted to attack her with the ax first.
The killer further claimed that the victim lost control of the weapon at one point, which resulted in a struggle between the two women.
When the alleged struggle reached its climax, Candy claimed Betty was the aggressor, which is why she ended up brutally killing her with the ax.

Due to her pleas of self-defense, Candy was acquitted of all of the charges brought against her.

Following the dismissal of the charges brought against the assailant, her whereabouts are shrouded in mystery.
The Daily Mail claimed Candy and her family moved to Georgia.
Sometime during the reported move to Georgia, she and her husband Pat Montgomery supposedly got divorced.
Outlets also reported that she goes by her maiden name Candace Wheeler and took on a career as a mental health therapist.
It appeared that she worked as a counseling psychologist at Creative Play Solutions LLC, located in the Georgia town of Dawsonville.
However, the aforementioned practice was permanently closed some time ago.
On May 9, 2022, Betty's homicide at the hands of Candy is retold in a miniseries titled after the latter.
The titular character is played by Jessica Biel and the show also stars Melanie Lynskey, Timothy Simons, and Pablo Schreiber.
HBO Max was given the green light to produce another series about the infamous killer, which is slated for a release date sometime in 2023.
The series, called Love and Death, is produced by David E Kelley and stars Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Rabe.
Olsen plays Candy and Lily Rabe takes on the role of victimized neighbor Betty.
