Another said: ‘Just wondering how the UK would have fared with Sam Ryder singing his new song. We could have been hosting again!’

A third tweeted: ‘UK back to reality eh. Sam Ryder was indeed a blip,’ while a fourth penned: ‘Sam Ryder should have won last year and this year! #Eurovision.’

A fifth commented: ‘Sam Ryder could of won Eurovision easily with that song he did in the interval – pure talent.’

Others called for Sam to represent the UK again, after Sweden’s 2012 winner Loreen returned to triumph at the 2023 Eurovision final, winning with 583 points.

Mae disappointed Eurovision fans with her live rendition of her track I Wrote A Song, with viewers questioning whether her microphone volume was low amid the quiet vocal quality.

A second said: ‘Obviously not going to be Mae Muller’s night but it was better song than the performance – couldn’t hear her – her mic was too low in the mix.’

While a third tweeted: ‘Really gutted for Mae Muller. I Wrote A Song is a great catchy pop tune but it just didn’t land as a live performance!’

Another added: ‘Wooo, second from bottom. Much better radio song than a live performance sadly from Mae Muller #Eurovision.’

Taking to the stage, Mae showed off her incredible figure in a black jumpsuit with a sheer bodice, which she styled with a cropped blazer.

She styled her raven locks in a blunt bob and accessorised her glamorous ensemble with an array of chunky silver necklaces.

Mae, from north London, accentuated her striking features with lashings of mascara and a touch of lipstick to complete the look.

She was joined on stage by an array of backing dancers wearing black trousers and sheer pink tops, and they all performed in front of colourful screen projections.

The Spaceman hitmaker was also joined by an array of people playing the drums as lights shone all around him during the very high-energy performance.

The crowds went wild for his show and he was seen grinning and fist-bumping the air in delight as he returned to Eurovision one year after he came in second place.

Liverpool hosted the 2023 competition on behalf of war-torn Ukraine, who won the contest last year with their act Kalush Orchestra.

Sam’s performance with Roger comes months after people compared him to the late Freddie Mercury after his Platinum Jubilee performance last summer.

Last June, the Eurovision star took to the stage in front of a 22,000-strong crowd at Buckingham Palace for the star-studded Party At The Palace show.

He showed off his sense of style in a denim jumpsuit embellished with colourful sequins, making up a Union Jack in tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.

And it wasn’t just his outfit that impressed as fans were left gobsmacked as he belted out his hit track Spaceman, which saw him bag second place on the Eurovision Song Contest.

Viewers took to Twitter to express their amazement at his wide-ranging vocals, dubbing him as the new Freddie Mercury for his ‘incredible’ performance.

Some fans even called for him to replace Adam Lambert as the new lead localist to perform alongside Queen, urging Brian May to contact the former TikTok star.

One person wrote: ‘@SamRyderMusic was amazing tonight! You now need to be the lead locals to replace Freddie in Queen.’

Another gushed: ‘As a big Freddie Mercury fan I was positive that no one could ever fill his shoes and so far I’ve been right. I stand corrected. If you [Sam] don’t get a call from Brian May there’s no justice in the world.’

And a third tweeted: ‘@SamRyderMusic should have duetted with Queen! He is Freddie Mercury’s vocals reincarnated!’

While a fourth commented: ‘Adam Lambert did a great job but did anyone notice that Sam Ryder actually sounded like Freddie Mercury?’

Elsewhere at Eurovision 2023, Sonia – who represented the UK in 1993 – returned to the Song Contest to perform in Saturday’s grand final.

Sonia, 52, known for her 1989 hit You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You, put on a very energetic show as she appeared on stage as a special guest.

The pop star sang her Eurovision hit Better The Devil You Know as she was surrounded by an array of male backing dancers.

She cut a glamorous figure in a sparkling sequinned mini dress, which she teamed with over-the-knee purple boots.

Speaking to MailOnline ahead of the final, Sonia told how she believed Sam had turned the UK’s fate around in Eurovision after years of lacklustre performances.

‘I think a lot of it was political. We just did not have any luck,’ she said. ‘We were always on the other side of the board and all the vitality just went out of it.’

‘Since Sam came along, he has reversed the whole thing. His approach and how positive he was about it, he turned it around. I did an interview with him and he’s the most lovely guy.’

Despite her high hopes, the UK were a long way from securing victory this year, with Sweden and Finland ultimately storming the leaderboard at the 2023 grand final.
