Fergie says royal life is ‘not a fairytale’ in telling resurfaced Oprah interview

Sarah Ferguson once made a telling remark about theRoyal Family during an interview withOprah Winfrey.

The Duchess of York, commonly known as Fergie, took part in a sit-down with the legendary US TV host as the royal looked to rebuild her life following her split from ex husbandPrince Andrew.

Fergie, now 63, was married to the Duke of York for 10 years before their divorce in 1996 and they had two daughters together –Princess Beatrice andPrincess Eugenie.

She and Andrew, also now 63, had split in 1992 after Fergie became embroiled in theinfamous toe-sucking scandal.

In a resurfaced clip from the 1996 interview with Oprah, Fergie said: "You didn't marry the fairytale, you married a man. You fell in love and married a man, and then you have to come to terms with the fairytale. Now it's not a fairy tale, it's real life."

The Duchess of York went on to discuss how she fell foul of the strict rules while living at Buckingham Palace – including being told off for opening the windows too much.

She said: “When you look at it from the outside, for any tourist looking at Buckingham Palace, all the windows have to be open only a certain amount, so they all are in line.

“Of course I’d come in and fling open all the windows. And no, that was wrong."

Elsewhere in the interview, Fergie discussed how her room at Buckingham Palace was about “a mile and a half” away from the state rooms that are open to the public – and the same distance away from the Palace kitchen.

She added: “We had one bedroom, two bathrooms, a dining room-cum-study-cum-nursery-cum-everything and a dressing room for me. That was it. And a sitting room to watch TV. That was it.”

Fergiediscussed the Oprah interview earlier this week as she was asked about her nephewPrince Harry and his relationship with his wifeMeghan Markle.

She spoke of how – like the Duke, 38, and Duchess of Sussex, 41 – she too had turned to the US when life in The Firm began to fall apart.

Fergie said: "I divorced, went to America, wrote a book, went on Oprah and did 12 years as the longest-running spokesperson of Weight Watchers.

"I looked to America to support me and to help me and I really can’t thank the American people enough for what they gave me and what they did for me."

She added: "So, I believe very strongly that I have absolutely no judgement on any other person’s life, and I look at how much she (Meghan) loves him (Harry) and loves the children and gives him a love that he’s never had before.”

Fergie, in interviews to promote her new historical novel, A Most Intriguing Lady, this week, appeared to take a swipe at Harry for criticising the Royal Family in his bombshell memoirSpare.

She also referred to hergranddaughter Sienna as “mini Beatrice” as she spoke of being a grandmother.
