Great British Bake Off’s Nadiya Hussain shares passion for shooting guns

Nadiya Hussain details time she baked a cake for the Queen

The Great British Bake Off star Nadiya Hussain has revealed her passion for shooting guns in a new interview, insisting that she has “pretty good” aim.

Starting out with a license to do recreational archery, she has now progressed to rifles – and has won warm praise from her shooting instructor.

“I’ve got a good eye,” the 38-year-old boasted proudly to OK!, admitting her teacher didn’t realise she wasn’t experienced.

“I recently went shooting and the instructor said, ‘Oh, have you done this before?’ I said, ‘No, I haven’t,’ and he goes, ‘You are really good. You need to come back,'” she explained.

Despite being a busy cookbook author and TV personality, the mum-of-three has found her passion a great way to get away from everyday life and let off steam.

The Buckinghamshire based star has even let her kids join in with her archery hobby – and now they have licenses too.

“I’ve just taken up archery recently. It’s something they do in our local woods,” she explained.

Nadiya initially felt intrigued after hearing the sounds of the sport during walks in the wilderness, continuing: “I could hear the ‘th-donk’ of the archers every time I walked past.'”

She asked her children – sons Musa, 17, and Dawud, 16, and daughter Maryam, 13 – what it could be and they let her in on the news that there was an archery range close by.

“That piqued my interest, so [my husband Abdal and I] got licences and our kids got licences. We all now have licences to do archery in the woods. I love it. It’s so therapeutic!” she marvelled.

Enjoying the outdoors is a help, as Nadiya previously revealed she is “scarily introverted” to the point that she sometimes feels she needs “pushing out of the house”.

She has suffered from overwhelming anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD for years – something which was accentuated further during the coronavirus pandemic.

During her 2019 documentary Anxiety and Me, she spoke of days when she “didn’t even want to get dressed”.

She also addressed her problems, which began age seven, in her memoir Finding My Voice, talking of a traumatic past which had left her “riddled” with anxiety.

She sought out cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) after her panic attacks escalated to the point she truly believed she was “going to die”.

“Anxiety is probably one of the most lonely, isolating things to have. You are your own worst enemy and you live inside your head,” she explained.

Fortunately, Nadiya’s confidence has been boosted over time and she has even revealed that she no longer feels “scared and daunted” in front of the camera the way she once did.
