‘I went on Love Island and I know why Jess and Sammy won – it didn’t surprise me’

Former Love Island star Olivia Hawkins is back for her final show column with OK!, after Monday night's final revealed Jess Harding and Sammy Root as the winners.

The pair's victory surprised some viewers, after many thought that show-favourite Whitney Adebayo was sure to storm to first place, and win the £50,000 cash prize, with her partner, Lochan Nowacki.

Many fans have even gone as far as to slam Love Island as a 'fix' after Jess and Sammy won, but ITV have now put those claims to bed as they revealed the voting figures, which saw Jess and Sammy receive 34.57% of the whole vote, whereas Whitney and Lochan got 26.85%.

Third place couple Ella Thomas and Tyriqye Hyde were close with 24.21%, whilst Molly Marsh and Zachariah Noble came in fourth place with 14.37% of the public vote.

For the past eight weeks, OK!'s fabulous Love Island columnist Olivia has been bringing us her take on all the trials and tribulations in the Majorcan villa, and now she's giving her final thoughts on the stellar summer series…

Jess and Sammy were deserving winners – here's why

I am really, really pleased that Jess and Sammy won the show – they've really grown on me.

At the start of their time on the show, I had reservations about each of them, but I think they're both actually genuine people – and their journey on the show has been real and honest.

Sammy has really matured in there, and his final night speech he mentioned winning over Jess' mum, which was really sweet.

I know that a lot of the public were shocked that Jess and Sammy won, because everyone thought it was going to be Whitney.

Whitney was amazing on the show, but it's not Personality Island, it's Love Island, and her and Lochan were the least progressed in their relationship of all the couples.

Tyrique and Ella's argument cost them

Tyrique and Ella always seemed like favourites to win the show, but I think Tyrique's emotional behaviour and the fight they had in the second-to-last episode cost them their place in the final two couples.

Having said that, I do think their argument was totally relatable, but I don't think the public will have liked it that close to the final.

I do have to say though, that their fight shows that they're real and genuine and weren't holding in their feelings or acting in a certain way just to win the show.

Whitney will be the most successful from this year's series

I definitely think Whitney will be the successful Islander from this series – her personality will take her really far.

Given fact that she was so popular with the show's viewers, I think she will have a great career ahead of her in terms of presenting and social media.

She has the ability to go in any direction she wants now, with the huge platform that she's generated.

My predictions for the Love Island couples' futures

I personally don't see any of the Love Island couples from this year's series lasting forever, but I think Sammy and Jess will stay together the longest.

My prediction is that Whitney and Lochan will be the first to break up, as I think she will be pulled in so many different directions when she's back, and it will probably impact her and Lochan's ability to build a stronger relationship.

I love Ella and Tyrique but I'm not sure their relationship will last longer than around half a year as they're so fiery. I said in one of my first Love Island columns that I can see them breaking up then getting back together, and I stand by that.

I think Molly and Zach will last around a year. They're from totally different worlds, but I do believe their connection is genuine, so it depends if they can make it on the outside, and fit into each other's lives.

Jess and Sammy will go further than any of the other couples, in my opinion, just because they're both from Essex – they won't have to relocate or do long distance to see each other.

They've got such a great spark and bounce off each other, with the same sort of sense of humour, and I think that will carry them far when they get out of the Love Island bubble.
