Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny whips up $130M global opening

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny whips up disappointing $130M global opening… $142M less than the Crystal Skull

As was predicted, Walt Disney Studios’ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny whipped up a disappointing $60M from 4,600 US theaters in its opening weekend for a global total of $130M.

Deadline reported Sunday that James Mangold’s fifth and final installment in the Indiana Jones franchise cost well over $300M to make, and $20M of that went to Harrison Ford’s paycheck.

Clocking in at two hours and 34 minutes, Dial of Destiny also made history as the longest Indiana Jones film.

The 1969-set action adventure flick cast edgy Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the famous globe-trotting archaeologist’s estranged goddaughter Helena Shaw, who’s the daughter of Basil Shaw (Toby Jones).

Dial of Destiny also features John Rhys-Davies, Antonio Banderas, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

It currently has a 68% critic approval rating (out of 307 reviews), but an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

And with $130M box office gross, it earned $142M less in its opening weekend than Steven Spielberg’s 2008 four-quel Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Fans were not thrilled with former Disney Channel star Shia LaBeouf as Marlon Brando-inspired greaser Mutt Williams – Indiana’s lovechild with Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) – who was unceremoniously killed off in the Vietnam War before Dial of Destiny.

‘I wanted to capture that wonderful energy between Indy and an intrepid female character,’ Mangold explained to Variety on June 14 of LaBeouf’s absence.

‘So, that was my first goal, and there’s only so many people you can edge into a picture.’

The 37-year-old Daytime Emmy winner has been arrested seven times, and he successfully completed a year-long judicial diversion program on May 2022 stemming from 2020 misdemeanor battery and petty theft charges.

Taking the No. 2 spot at the box office this weekend was Sony Pictures’ animated superhero flick Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with $11.5M from 3,405 US theaters for a global total of $339.8M since opening June 2.

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson directed the $100M-budget, 140-minute hit – starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Brian Tyree Henry – which is by far the best reviewed movie with a ‘certified fresh’ 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
