Joanna Lumley shares rare intimate insight into her ‘romance’ with Rod Stewart

The Jonathan Ross Show: Joanna Lumley discusses modelling

Dame Joanna Lumley has called Sir Rod Stewart “a good man” after the pair dated for a few months, early on in their careers.

The Absolutely Fabulous actress, 77, shared anecdotes from the former couple’s time together and declared their short-lived romance was “wonderful”.

Speaking on how they first met, Joanna told Vernon Kay on Tracks Of My Years: “Rod was always good-natured and when I met him it was at a Radisson hotel on the way out just by Chiswick.

“I had been asked to stand in for Lulu and they were giving prizes; football prizes.

“I was a model and an early actress, so I came along, went to that and Rod was there giving a prize because he’s a keen footballer.

“Rod was so nice and I knew he was a famous rock star but I didn’t know which one because I’ve got this thing with faces – I’ve got face blindness,” she explained.

Joanna shared that the Maggie May singer proceeded to ask her on a date.

The actress revealed: “We had a lovely short romance which was about two or three months, but he was wonderful.

“Driving in his Lamborghini and we were coming back from his house near Windsor and I said, ‘Come on, let’s get past these dull, slow cars’. He said, ‘That’s terribly rude to do that if you have got a fast car’. He’s a good man,” she added.

Sir Rod, 78, also previously spoke out about their relationship and admitted that she “was a wonderful woman”, but admitted that initially, he was “scared” of her.

In 2010, he told Piers Morgan that she was “so upper-crust” it intimidated him.

Sir Rod said: “I was actually scared to talk because Joanna talked awfully wonderfully.”

He thought she was “too posh” for him and believed she would mock him for his “North London” accent.

Despite his reservations, he described her as “wonderful” and said “bless her”, before claiming he felt guilty about ending their relationship.

Sir Rod explained that Joanna being “too posh” and his longing to pursue other women was the reason they broke up.

He said: “It’s horrible, the only way I can defend myself is [that] I was going through the cards.”

Sir Rod explained that “going through the cards” meant he was “trying to find the right woman”.
