I’m a dog expert – here's exactly when you should get a second pet, and it’s not when you think | The Sun

IF you’re a dog owner and you want to expand your pet family you may be wondering when is the best time to bring a new pet into your home.

A dog expert has shared the ideal time to bring a second pet into your home so that it causes less work for you and doesn't strain on your other pet.

TikTok user American Standard K9 is the self-described "#1 Dog Trainer on the Interwebs!"

He shared dog training tips and tricks, and advice on how to properly take care of your pet.

In a TikTok video, he shared what age your first dog should be before you decide to get another one.

He said: “If you already have a dog or puppy, when is the best time to go ahead and get that second dog?”

If you have two puppies who are close in age living together in the same house you might get something called littermate syndrome.

Littermate syndrome can occur when two puppies adopted from the same litter grow up together in the same home.

In some cases, the puppies form such a deep bond with each other that they fail to properly socialise with people and other dogs, in other scenarios the two togs constantly fight for territory.

Signs of littermate syndrome include fearfulness of unfamiliar people, dogs, and other novel stimuli (neophobia); intense anxiety when separated, even briefly; and difficulty learning basic obedience skills.

He explains looking after more than one puppy is a lot of work.

“Raising one puppy from start to finish is painstaking enough. You add a second dog to the equation?”

“It's usually not twice as hard. It's four times as hard to deal with two young puppies.”

The dog expert says your first dog should be over two years old and properly before you get another one.

“Therefore, we as professional dog trainers, recommend that you don't bring a second dog into your family until your first dog has reached full physical and mental maturity, which is around two years of age.”

“So we recommend around two years old when you can bring a new dog into the house.”

This way you can spend the time that you need to focus on your second pet.

The dog experts video gained over 60,000 views with users saying the advice was spot on.

Others confessed they wished they had learned the tip sooner.

One user said: “I wish I seen this video one year ago
