I'm a jewellery expert – my 10p cleaning hack will have your gold & silver sparkling in minutes | The Sun

JEWELLERY can lose its sparkle overtime, especially if it’s in constant use, but there are some ways you can get it looking good as new.

There’s good news though, as there are two great cleaning hacks that will have your gold and silver sparkling like they’re brand new – and you likely already have the ingredients at home.

Talking to the Mirror, Jasmin Stanbridge, Lead Product Designer at Abbott Lyon, has shared her top tips for keeping your jewellery shining for years, and each method only costs an average of 10p.

Gold plated jewellery

Dish shop method

Gold jewellery can easily have its shine restored and be brought back to life with a gentle wash with soap and water.

Mix a mild liquid soap and some warm water into a bowl until you have a foamy solution, then just place your jewellery in and leave it to soak.

After a few minutes take the jewellery out and use a soft cloth to gently rub the items, be sure to wipe all the surface areas.

If it’s a bit finicky to clean and there are a lot of small details on the item then you can use a soft bristled toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crannies.

Once the item has been cleaned then just rinse it under some warm water, and dry thoroughly before returning to your jewellery box.

Baking soda method

Deep clean your jewellery and restore its shine with this simple baking soda method.

First you need to line a glass bowl with aluminium foil, ensuring the shiny side is facing up.

Then add one tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of salt to the bowl and cover it with enough hot water that these dissolve and there’s enough mixture to fully submerge your jewellery.

Add the jewellery to the bowl and leave to soak for a few minutes.

Don’t be concerned if you see black and yellow flakes floating away from the jewellery, this is just the sulphur from the mixture not your jewellery flaking.

After a few minutes remove the jewellery from the bowl, wipe clean with a cloth and then rinse under some warm water.

Always be sure to thoroughly dry your jewellery before returning it to your box.

Silver jewellery

If you’re more of a fan of silver jewellery than gold you can still use these methods, unless the items in question are sterling silver.

According to Pandora baking soda can actually damage your sterling silver in the long term by causing scratches and other damage.
