The Princess of Wales chose a monochrome camel and very autumnal look for the official engagement in Scarborough consisting of a three-quarter length MAX&Co camel coat, which retails for £460, and a wool dress in the same colour.

Kate added a chunky brown belt from Boden to the look and wore a pair of Ralph Lauren brown pumps.

Royal fans took to social media to praise the Princess’ look with @wallisbrownann saying: “Stunning outfit, gorgeous gal – classy and stylish!!!”

Another one, @annpomphrey, commented: “The Princess of Wales – beautiful as always.”

Meghan Markle donned a very similar look in 2020 when she and Prince Harry visited Canada House in London.

Fashion and royal expert Miranda Holder commented on the similarities and differences between the two autumn looks.

She said: “Kate stepped out looking every inch the polished Princess in Scarborough today. A vision in camel, she stayed true to her signature monochromatic style, but this time opted for timeless naturals that complemented her natural autumn colour palette rather than the rainbow brights that we are more used to seeing.

“The beautifully tailored camel coat by M&co added structure to her look, but she omitted the belt, choosing instead to define her shapely waist with a woven tan belt which gave the relaxed knitted dress a more dressy feel.

“She also swapped her usual nude-toned court shoes for a more seasonally-appropriate brown pair, completing the look with a top-handled DeMellier bag reminiscent of the Launer ones favoured by The Queen.”

Miranda explained the Princess of Wales was definitely channelling the late monarch with her choice of handbag, as Queen Elizabeth was rarely seen without one of her signature Launer handbags.

Meghan’s look, on the other hand, was “more tonal, wearing shades of camel, copper and chocolate,” whereas Kate’s outfit was “far more monochromatic, in keeping with her signature style”.

The expert revealed Kate was actually following a “style trick the Queen adopted fairly early on on her reign, which helped to cement her ‘personal brand’.”

Queen Elizabeth was a fan of the monochrome style and would always wear brightly coloured outfits.

In fact, her preference to dress in one colour from head to toe turned her classic ensembles into iconic looks.

Miranda added: “It is still very much the image we all have in our mind’s eye today, it is no mistake that Kate is emulating Her Majesty.

“And the choice of handbag adds to this – Kate is clearly being styled for her future role as Queen,” Miranda said.

The fashion expert added: “The whole look feels sophisticated, polished and expensive.”

Talking about Meghan’s look, she said: “The camel coat is a favourite wardrobe hero of Meghan’s and she is often spotted wearing one over everything from a formal gown to sportswear, pulling any outfit together and adding elegance.”

The stylist shared her verdict: “Personally I actually prefer Meghan’s look out of these two, the rich, tonal palette complements Meghan’s darker colouring and makes the outfit pop.

“Although Kate’s choice is sophisticated and ticks all the right boxes, something just hasn’t landed here and for me it’s a little bland.”
