Queen Margrethe wears £400,000 ‘eclectic’ choker ‘just like Diana’

Queen Margrethe, who is renowned for her eclectic style, turned 83 years old on Sunday. The Danish Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2022 with her entire family.

Fine jewellery experts at UK store Steven Stone have closely examined some of the Danish Queen’s largest and most varied pieces of jewels in honour of the monarch’s recent birthday celebrations on April 16, 2023.

Maxwell Stone, the Creative Director at Steven Stone, spoke to Express.co.uk to explain some of Margrethe’s best-known jewellery moments, some of which resemble Princess Diana’s jewellery.

He said: “Queen Margrethe is known for adding artistic flourishes to her outfits with her jewellery collection.

“Just like Princess Diana, she’s unafraid to wear the pieces in her own unique way.

“For example, by affixing black silk to one of her diamond floral bracelets, she’s been able to wear it as a choker.

“From her 12-carat engagement ring that’s worth a staggering £1million, to the diamond wreath scroll tiara that she wore on her wedding day, the Danish Queen has one of the grandest and most eclectic jewellery collections among Europe’s royal houses.”

The following pieces of jewellery are some of the most well-known items in Queen Margrethe’s collection.

Floral Choker Bracelet

With an intricate floral design, this £400,000 jewel, which is similar to the late Princess of Wales’s famous sapphire choker, has a complicated and heavy section in the middle.

It dates from the 1840s and was originally a bracelet. Queen Margrethe attached black silk to it so she could wear it as a choker, similarly to how Diana turned her wedding brooch into a sapphire choker.

The Khedive of Egypt Tiara

This is a diamond wreath scroll tiara which was a wedding gift from the Khedive of Egypt to Princess Margaret of Connaught.

It later became the official wedding diadem for all of Queen Ingrid’s female descendants. It is said to be worth £2.5million.

Engagement Ring

This jewel features two Princess cut diamonds – representing the bride and her groom, the late Prince Henrik of Denmark.

It has 12 carats and is the second most valuable royal engagement ring estimated at £1million.

George Jensen Jubilee Brooch

This was crafted by the royal warrant holder George Bensen to celebrate the Danish Queen’s 50 years on the throne.

The brooch has an 18 karat gold beam and features 50 grooves along the edge that represent the years since the Queen’s ascension to the throne in 1972. It is worth a whopping £16,000.

Diamond Daisy Brooch

This is a large diamond brooch in the shape of a daisy. It is made of diamonds that belonged to Princess Margareta, who died in 1920.

It was commissioned by Crown Prince Gustalf Adolf of Sweden in 1935. The jewel is worth £160,000.

The Golden Jubilee of Queen Margrethe II was a significant milestone for the Danish Royal Family last year.

Since January 14, 1972, the Danish Queen has ruled over the country and given birth to two sons – Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.

On January 14, 1972, Margrethe succeeded her father, King Frederik IX of Denmark, as the monarch of Denmark. The day after, she was proclaimed Queen.
