David Ames’ life off screen as he joins Hollyoaks as newcomer Carter Shepherd

Swapping the wards of Holby City for a new role in Hollyoaks, actor David Ames delighted fans this week when a first look episode, saw the star make his debut in the Channel 4 soap as new headteacher Carter Shepherd.

The exciting episode first got underway when Goldie McQueen (Chelsee Healey) poignantly admitted to (Ross Adams)that she had been struggling recently.

Later, Goldie continued to lament about her situation at Bronzer’s memorial bench, while asking for a sign to help her through the particularly rough patch.

It was then that Carter first made his on screen debut, with the star volunteering to be a shoulder to cry on for Goldie in her hour of need.

While it’s unknown yet whether Carter has purely well intentioned motives or another scheme at play, fans do know that he has at least one connection to an existing villager, as he is the father of student Freya Calder, and the widower of murdered Detective Inspector Lexi Calder.

Speaking to The Mirror about his debut on the soap, David teased fans with what lay ahead, as he admitted: ”You don’t get a brand new character in a long-running soap without there being some sort of history as we all have history, so it's going to be very interesting.

"He comes with a lot of skeletons in his closet that will slowly come to light. He’s also the widow of Detective Inspector Lexi Calder so we will find out more about their relationship I’m sure as we go down the line. It will be fun to watch."

While Carter himself may still remain a mystery to fans, one person we thankfully do know more about, is the star that plays him David Ames.

Here’s everything you need to know about the star.

Early life

Born on August 10 1983, David first started his life in Hampshire, where he developed a keen love of the arts and performing.

The talented star, who recently just turned 40, first cut his teeth in the professional acting world when he was 25, and bagged himself a role in the TV movie He Kills Coppers.

A further high profile role followed the following year, when in 2009 Dominic played the character of Nathan during an episode of Doctor Who entitled Planet of the Dead.

It was this role in particular that saw him star alongside the tenth doctor of the show David Tennant.

Interestingly, two years after his Doctor Who debut, David also voiced a character in the spin off Doctor Who: The Adventure Game.

Holby City

David’s biggest role to date has to be his starring role in BBC medical drama Holby City, which he first took on in 2013.

Playing the character of Dominic Copeland, David tackled a number of gruelling storylines over the years, including Dom’s abuse at the hands of his partner, which really shone a light on the struggles faced by men experiencing domestic violence.

The character was also integral to a storyline surrounding steroid addiction and demonstrated severe trust issues in the wake of his experiences.

As well as more dramatic storylines, Dominic was also a key character in a very health centric storyline which saw him contract Hepatitis C after suffering from a needle stick injury.

David held the role of Dominic for 9 years in total, right up until the show’s cancellation in 2022.

Personal life

Away from his acting, David lives a busy but fun social life, with the star often sharing snaps of his adventures with friends on Instagram.

One running theme in many of the stars photos is his love of scenic backgrounds, particularly sunset walks.

Another key fact is definitely his love of spending time with his friends, be it in a pool or at the pub, as the social butterfly is always smiling and keen to spend time with the people that matter in his life.

A strong advocate for the LGBT+ community, as an openly gay man himself David has always been keen to uplift and inspire others, as well as encouraging others to take on roles that reflect the real everyday challenges the community faces.

When he’s not acting on screen, he can often be found acting on stage, with his most recent theatre role since leaving Holby being as Steven in a Seven Dials Playhouse's premiere production of Steve, starring alongside Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell.

He is currently believed to be single.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6:.0pm on Channel 4 and 4OD, with first look episodes airing at 7pm on E4.
