Dresses that shout disco

H&M’s newest designer collaboration channels the party spirit of the Sixties with… Dresses that shout disco

  • H&M has teamed up with Parisian fashion powerhouse Rabanne

I don’t know who wants to break the news to the Christmas tinsel, but it’s about to look very dull indeed next to the latest designer collaboration from H&M.

Step forward Rabanne, the Parisian fashion powerhouse has teamed up with the High Street giant to serve up a covetable collection that has fashion editors salivating — and sharpening their elbows to be first in the queue for the launch on November 9.

Paco Rabanne, who died earlier this year, stepped back from designing in 1999, making way for his successor Julien Dossena. But his spirit is well and truly alive in these dynamic 1960s-inspired outfits.

Chunky paillettes, shimmering lurex, kaleidoscopic colours and gleaming molten-metal-effect fabrics — the experimental touches that made Paco Rabanne an icon of the decade’s ‘space-age’ look — are all here.

These are my favourites from a fun collection.

Top, £89.98, and skirt, £189.99, hm.com

TOP TO TOE SPARKLE

This has the same fabulous vibe as the mini dress, but with a more secure helping of fabric.

And the gleaming molten look is more versatile than you might well assume.

The gorgeous paillette shell top would work dressed down with jeans, or peeking from under a black trouser suit.

The divine skirt needs nothing but a white shirt an would still be the centre of attention in any room.

DESIGNER LEOPARD

Dress, £139.99, hm.com

Leopard-print dresses may be  everywhere these days, but it’s the Rabanne touch of that striking metal disc, so beautifully gathering in the ruched midriff, that makes this one so worthy of your attention.

It’s a figure-flattering crowd-pleaser, and a hard-working one at that, when you think how great it will look for day with knee-length boots, or with strappy heels for an effortless party look.

SHIMMERING MINI

Dress, £279.99, hm.com; ring, £60, jigsawonline.com

The iconic look that springs to mind when we think of Paco Rabanne: all those bedazzling paillettes.

And, as it was in the 1960s, this mini is so mini it’s bordering on being a tank top — definitely not for the shy party girl. But isn’t it fabulous? This is guaranteed to sell out faster than you can  say Barbarella. And it will definitely upstage every disco glitterball it meets

LUREX PRINT

Top, £64.99, and trousers, £64.99, both hm.com; shoes, £35, schuh.co.uk

This co-ord set is No1 on my wish list. It’s a lovely slice of 1960s slinkiness I’ll wear on repeat. The bold, graphic print in lurex — textbook Rabanne — makes it a perfect party option.

RETRO FLORALS

Dress, £139.99, and shoes, £189.99, both hm.com

The palette is pretty, as are the gently fluted sleeves and the maxi length.

But it’s that quirky cut-out at the decolletage that gives this floral dress its Rabanne DNA.

Attention has been paid to the little details, too, like those retro, space-age metallic buttons on the high collar.

At first glance, this dress may look sweet, but it’s actually devastatingly sexy.

MILITARY MIGHT

Jacket, £279, shirt, £199.99, and trousers, £89.99, hm.com; shoes, £19.99, tkmaxx.com; earrings, £50, jigsawonline. com

The one and only Cher rocked this jacket at the Paris launch party for the collection and looked amazing. The gold embroidery and hardwear help it look more expensive than it is. I love the pairing of it with a longer-line shirt to emphasise its sharp cropped length.

The trousers — part of the collection’s glamorous tracksuit — have military stripes to complete a polished utilitarian look.
