When is the French Open in 2023?
The 2023 French Open gets under way on Sunday May 28.

Men’s French Open 2023 favourites
Carlos Alcaraz is arguably the man to beat at Roland Garros this year.
A natural on clay, the Spaniard missed the Australian Open but opened his season with a title in Buenos Aires on the red dirt and he’s since backed that up by adding another trophy to his ever-growing CV in Barcelona.
Has great ability to turn defence into attack which is always a hugely valuable asset on this surface.
Novak Djokovic comes next in the market but he’s struggled for form since winning the Australian Open in January, suffering early clay exits in Monte Carlo and Banja Luka. The Serb will need to improve in the lead-in to the event.
And what of Holger Rune, the Danish youngster?
Well, he remains a short price – third favourite in most markets. Following a dramatic tournament in Rome, where he outclassed Novak Djokovic and his Norwegian rival Casper Ruud, Rune fell short in the final against Medvedev – who is currently fourth favourite leading into Roland Garros.
He may not have won the final in Rome, but if he can show the same form as he did against Djokovic he is definitely a contender for the title in Paris.

Women’s French Open 2023 favourites
Iga Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite to successfully defend her French Open crown, one she also captured in 2020.
The Pole has a strong serve and on this surface gets the time to line up her crunching groundstrokes, with the forehand a particularly potent weapon.
Clay is very much her domain, and unlike many colleagues, she is not fazed by it in any way.
She began her clay season by winning the big warm-up event in Stuttgart and certainly looks the one to beat again.
Coco Gauff, beaten in last year’s final by Swiatek, is more than able on the clay but Aryna Sabalenka looks set to bring the greater form into the event.
She won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and only Swiatek proved better than her on the Stuttgart clay.
Elena Rybakina is the other player to have shone brightly so far in 2023 but the reigning Wimbledon champion sees her serve blunted somewhat on this surface and better opportunities will like ahead for her in the weeks and months after Roland Garros.
Ones to watch for the French Open
Aside from the favourites, mentioned above, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz have both caught the eye having moved onto the clay.
Daniil Medvedev made it to the final in Rome, where he managed to get a win against third favourite for Paris, Holger Rune.
For those seeking someone at a bigger price, Fritz could fit the bill.
He was a semi-finalist at those aforementioned tournaments in Monte Carlo and Munich, proving he’s adapting his game to the clay.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was among his victims in Monaco, although the Greek should certainly not be overlooked in Paris.
He made the final here in 2021 and is not easily beaten on the clay.
On the women’s side, the 2021 champion, Barbora Krejcikova, has been returning to form after injury ruined her clay court season this time last year.
The Czech won on hardcourts in Dubai earlier this season and will now look to transfer her solid form onto her favourite surface where her strong defence makes her difficult to deal with.
And perhaps Martina Trevisan can once again deliver at the French Open.
An old-school clay court specialist, the Italian made the quarter-finals here in 2020 and the semis last year. However, her fitness was recently called into question when she withdrew injured in Stuttgart.
