Have you ever been served a drink with a straw complete with the tip of its paper covering still intact?
Well, if you’ve ever wondered why this is the case, Ohio-based bartender Conner Kochansky has revealed all in a viral TikTok which has been viewed more than 370,000 times.
In the 11-second-long video, he details one of his favorite server tips concerning straw etiquette.
He says that he always puts straws in drinks, and rips the bottom half of the paper cover off for customers. He then holds up the paper wrapper, and explains: ‘That way you don’t find these all over your section. Less sweeping, less stress.’

Quick Server Tip: Put the straw in the guests drink as you pick it up from the service well This will eliminate extra white trash in your section and impress the guests If you’re anti-straw #savetheturtles understand that 95% of midwesterners are asking “wheres my straw?!?” Before I’ve even set down their drink #moremoney #lessstress #makemore #psychology #smarternotharder #serverlife #servertiktok #straw #hack
Dozens of viewers have commented on Conner’s clip, with many thanking him for his tip.
However, one commenter who works in the service industry said at their restaurant, straws have to be requested by the guest to save plastic.
In his defense, Conner replied: ‘In the Midwest everyone wants their straws.’
Another bartender commented: ‘I’m a server we don’t even have the straws in wrappers anymore… they’re just bare. Lol.’
Connor highlights in the comment section that his method of unwrapping the straw is very hygienic as he does not touch it at any point.
The bartender’s second most-watched TikTok shows him slamming QR code menus.
He advises fellow drinks servers and waiting staff: ‘If your restaurant has QR code menus put out the physical menus too.
‘Nobody likes looking at their phone to see what they’re going to eat or drink, especially not old people and make sure they’re wiped down too.’

Many viewers agreed with the hospitality pro.
One commenter says QR codes are especially annoying when the Wi-Fi is slow, and another hospitality worker said many patrons take longer loading QR menus, so it can delay the whole process.
Connor currently works at an Ohio branch of the sports-themed bar chain TopGolf.
Currently he has shared 14 bartending tips via TikTok and he has more in-depth pieces of advice in a book he penned titled ‘Turning Tables: Make more money serving tables.’
On Amazon, the tome is described as: ‘A collection of tips for service industry professionals to improve job satisfaction, guest experience, sales, tips, and social skills.
‘Centered around serving tables, these skills have real world application. This book will not only make you a better server, it will make you a more effective human.’
