A newly-engaged couple have sparked fierce debate after ‘expecting’ their friends to pick up the check at a dinner celebrating their proposal.

Ebony Mackey took to TikTok to explain how she was left ‘annoyed’ after she and partner Jon Nelsen were forced into covering the $800 cost of a celebratory meal for their pals.

The business owner, from New York, explained that Jon ended up putting his card down after the husband-to-be conveniently left to use the bathroom when the check was brought out.

She later told her pal not to expect any contribution toward the upcoming wedding because the dinner ‘was worth a lot more than most things on the registry.’

The business owner, from New York, explained that Jon ended up putting his card down after the husband-to-be conveniently left to use the bathroom when the check was brought out

In the clip, which has so far been viewed more than 195,000 times, Ebony speaks directly to camera to untangle the situation that had been ‘bothering’ her for a few days.

She began by explaining that she and Jon had gone out to eat with another couple who had recently got engaged because the group had ‘a lot to catch up on.’

Ebony caveated that the engagement had actually happened months ago but that it was simply the first time the friends had seen each other since.

The content creator said that she and Jon waited 30 minutes at the bar for the couple who were running late.

Eventually, the foursome got round to ordering full meals – including appetizers and drinks.

‘The conversation is going well. We’re having a great night,’ Ebony explained.

‘It’s been about an hour to an hour and a half. We all do a celebratory shot. And at the end of that Jon and I are noticing that the restaurant is starting to close. They’re starting to pack up.’

Ebony signaled for the check before the waitress dropped the $800 bill ‘in the middle of the table’ which ‘everyone sees.’

This was honestly so awkward and expensive!!! I was so annoyed with both the other man and woman but we kept our cool and will probably NOT be going out with them again. #storytime #fyp #datenight #advice #truestory #relatable #husband

The post was quickly flooded with comments from other social media users who were left bitterly divided

But that is where things took a turn for the worst.

‘The guy suddenly goes, “Oh where’s the bathroom? I need to use the bathroom,”‘ Ebony revealed.

‘Jon knees me under the table and I’m just like, are they going to try to stick us with a bill?’

She explained how the woman looked at the remaining pair before Jon eventually reached out for the check, to which she responded: ‘Oh, you’re treating?’

‘And Jon goes, “I guess so.” And I’m sitting there like, what the f**k?’ Ebony revealed.

The man who ran to the bathroom then returned and, after seeing Jon’s card on the table, also exclaimed: ‘Oh, thank you for treating.’

Jon said that it was not a problem but Ebony admitted: ‘At this point, I’m very annoyed.

‘I’m annoyed with her and I’m annoyed with him and I didn’t say anything.

‘And we wound up paying for their entire meal, plus their drinks, plus the tip. What would you have done in this situation?’

Ebony uploaded the clip alongside a caption that read: ‘This was honestly so awkward and expensive!!! I was so annoyed with both the other man and woman but we kept our cool and will probably NOT be going out with them again.’

And the post was quickly flooded with comments from other social media users who were left bitterly divided.

Ebony received so much interaction as a result of the post that she went on to share a follow-up clip titled: ‘Dinner story part two’

One person wrote: ‘In the future, when someone asks, “Oh you’re treating?” Be truthful. Say, “no I think it’s best that we split it.” It really is as simple as that.’

‘Honestly, I’m annoyed that you guys would be this bothered YET not say anything! I’d IMMEDIATELY let them know,’ another person added.

A third person chimed in: ‘These situations ARE awkward but [people] who win are the ones who take the lead. So pick up the check AND announce: “let’s split it down the middle.”‘

‘Split the bill 50/50 or tell the person waiting on your table up front that there will be two separate bills,’ another person wrote.

One person gave the other couple a benefit of doubt and wrote: ‘Maybe they thought you were treating them as an engagement gift.’

Another person added: ‘I would have done what your man did… he was gracious…and it would be the LAST meal for the other couple.’

Ebony received so much interaction as a result of the post that she went on to share a follow-up clip titled: ‘Dinner story part two.’

In it, she issued further context on the situation.

‘We live in Manhattan and every single time that we go out to eat if there are a group of people, every single man will pull out their card when the tab comes.

‘You don’t really go to dinner, and tell the waitress, “ok, we’re gonna split this, three, four, or five different ways.

‘It just not really how its done in Manhattan. You just put the cards down and then typically the waitress or waiter will just split it straight through all the cards.

‘That’s what we’re used to. That’s how we go out in hospitality.’

Ebony and Jon then said their goodbyes as the other man went to shake Jon’s hand – but he decided to ‘completely ignore him’

Replying to @Kayla_C We’re such awful friends paying for their dinner and not causing a scene 😂 #storytime #truestory #fyp #relatable #dinnerdate #pov #advice #husband

She continued: ‘John is never not going to [put his card down].

‘He’s a gentleman and he will just take it on the chin. He’ll make note of it and then we will probably never go out to eat with them again.

‘And if we do, Jon calls people out. He lets it happen one time but then the next time he’ll say something.

‘He’ll be like “so am I paying for this now too or what’s going on?” He will do that.’

Ebony confessed that following the incident she asked her female friend to go with her to the bar to discuss it – because she did not want to argue publicly and become the ‘problem table.’

She said: ‘So I bring her to the bar and I say “hey, what was going on with that? Jon was not really going to pay for everyone’s meal at the table.”‘

Ebony claimed that the woman’s response was that her fiancé ‘went to the bathroom and Jon just pulled out his card… by the time he came back [the waitress] was already taking the tab away.”‘

The disgruntled diner then told her friend: ‘When you get married just know we’re not contributing a single thing and if you don’t want to invite us that’s perfectly fine…

‘This dinner was worth a lot more than most things on your registry.’

Ebony and Jon then said their goodbyes at which point Jon decided to ‘completely ignore’ the man as he went to shake his hand.
