Older Love Island fans bemoan the 'barely-there swimwear'

Are YOU bold enough to try a ‘dental floss string’ bikini? Love Islanders are the latest to wear celeb-approved ‘near-naked’ style that’s all over the high street – and experts warn the daring trend isn’t going anywhere

  • Older Love Island fans bemoaned barely-there bikinis being paraded in the villa
  • Stylist told FEMAIL that the ‘near-naked swimwear’ is here to stay this summer
  • In Wednesday’s episode Tasha Ghouri commanded attention in a tiny two-piece

It’s a daring trend that stylists have warned is here to stay – but would you be brave enough to try a barely-there bikini this summer?

They’ve become a constant sight for Love Island fans, as this year’s contestants battle it out for attention by wearing the ‘near-naked’ swimwear as a ‘shock style’ tactic, according to TV & celebrity style expert Miranda Holder.

But it’s also approved by celebrities such as American model Emily Ratajkowski, 31, and Kim Kardashian, 41, who regularly showcase their toned figures in mini two-pieces.

And Miranda, plus fellow celebrity stylist Rochelle White, have told FEMAIL the popular thong bikinis are going nowhere – with body positive women now more eager than ever to show off their assets, while others are picking ‘the fun’ option to embrace the summer following the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, British fashion brands such as River Island, Boohoo and ASOS offer an array of barely-there bikinis – suggesting they’re definitely not out of style just yet.

It comes as older Love Island fans bemoaned the barely-there bikinis being paraded in the villa this season.

The eighth series of the popular ITV2 show is causing a stir online after viewers of an older generation than the twenty-something contestants criticised their choices in bikinis.

In Wednesday’s episode Tasha Ghouri, 23, commanded attention in a tiny red two-piece, which offered very little coverage, while in Tuesday’s scenes, Indiyah Polack, 23, Amber Beckford, 24, left little to the imagination with their barely-there bikinis.

But it’s not just Love Islanders who are embracing this trend – celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski, who is known for her love of barely-there string bikinis, are also showcasing their assets in the ensembles.

Meanwhile Kim Kardashian recently showed off her voluptuous curves in a micro bikini thong from her SKIMS V-day collection. She donned the set as a bikini while on the beach in the Bahamas in January 2022.

Miranda told FEMAIL the trend is here to stay thanks to people wanting to have more fun following the coronavirus pandemic, and due to an increase in body positivity, meaning more women are comfortable showing off their figure.

She said: ‘It seems that less is definitely more when it comes to the Love Island crew and their swimwear this year.

‘The shrinking bikini trend first made popular in the hedonistic 80’s, has become increasingly fashionable over the last couple of years and this season’s reality TV hopefuls are embracing this trend with both buttocks.

‘It’s almost as if the contestants are trying to outdo each other in terms of who can wear the least and bare the most, but perhaps this is the point.

‘The one aspect you can rely on when wearing such skimpy swimwear (as coverage is definitely something that cannot be guaranteed) is grabbing all the attention.

‘The hopefuls have their hearts set on stardom, and are bringing their skimpy sartorial A game to this battle.’

Miranda continued: ‘Apart from the style shock tactics, there is another reason the barely-there bikini is on the rise, and that is the mood of the nation.

Dua Lipa left little to the imagination as she slipped into barely-there crocheted swimwear last summer

Meanwhile Demi Rose showcased her curves in a tiny bikini during a recent trip to Capri, Italy

‘We have all been cooped up, stuck in our joggers and sweats throughout the enduring pandemic and this summer it finally feels like we are all getting our lives back.

‘There is a sense of catching up on lost time, we want to wear clothes that are fun, bring us joy and make us want to party, and the millennials of the Love Island villa are leading from the (scantily clad) front.’

The fashion expert also said that the rise of the barely-there bikini is due to many more women being comfortable with their bodies following the rise of inclusivity in the fashion world.

‘Do you need to have a perfect body to rock a micro bikini? In short, these days – no,’ said Miranda.

‘Inclusivity is the buzzword of the day, and body positivity is also thankfully on the rise, leading to all shapes and sizes baring their midriff and more.’

Celebrity stylist Rochelle White agreed, telling FEMAIL: ‘I feel that this current trend in swimwear is having a moment due to the fact that the past two years we were in lockdown and lived in casual clothes and loungewear.

Kendall Jenner put on a show-stopping display in a previous trip to Miami. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star looked incredible in a scanty bikini with a tiny top and bottoms which flashed her posterior and a mass of underboob

‘Then in 2021, there was a rise in barely there clothes and fashion trends. With even designers and brands creating their own looks and pushing these trends.

‘Then celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Dua Lipa and more started rocking more barely there bikinis as well as the upside down trend.’

She added: ‘I feel that more people are becoming more comfortable in their bodies and are happy to show them off. These styles are seen as fun and carefree.’

Some viewers took to Twitter to share their shock over the Love Island contestants’ bikinis.

One person said: ‘At the risk of sounding like an old fart… why are bikini bottoms so tiny these days?’

‘Shops only seem to stock these teeny thongy dental floss atrocities. Now I love me a bottom but no one needs to see that much of my derriere.’

Another wrote: ‘Tragic, really, that so many girls on Love Island are unable to find a bikini top in their size.’

A third added: ‘Okay first Love Island question, why do all of the girls wear bikini tops that do not in any way cover their boobs?’
