The Queen of Clean has warned fans to avoid an online dishwasher hack which ultimately left her trainers in shreds.

On  today’s episode of This Morning, Holly Willoughby said she saw a hack on social media where someone put their dirty white trainers into the dishwasher and then showed them being sparkly clean when they got them out.

Lynsey Crombie, from Peterborough, put this to the test and unfortunately paid the price because it wrecked her trainers.

She said: ‘I saw (Holly’s) comment and I thought, “What’s she on about?” So I had to try it. One of my trainers had a bit of duck poo from walking the dog and I thought you know what, those are the ones to put in.’

She then revealed the results and said: ‘I don’t recommend this guys!’

Video footage shows her putting her perfectly intact trainers into the dishwasher.

But in the studio, Lynsey revealed her broken shoes, which had been shredded to pieces.

The lining was sticking out, the sole and cushioning of the show had be ruined, and the pink from the shoe dyed the white laces.

Lynsey said: ‘I think because the dishwasher is hot – the minimum heat on mine is 45 degrees – and then you get the steam, and I think it’s the steam that’s caused it.’

She then revealed the shoes left ‘flakes of leather’ at the bottom of her dishwasher, adding ‘they were just this big soggy mess.’

Holly then warned viewers: ‘Don’t put your shoes in the dishwasher kids!’

Lynsey then had to clean her dishwasher after the shoes had been in it and said: ‘The whole thing just felt disgusting so I gave it a really good clean.’

But it’s not all bad news, as she revealed that there are in fact some items of clothing that we can put in our dishwasher.

She revealed that running the dishwasher is cheaper as well, around two pence per hour compared to 14 pence per hour for a washing machine, dependent on the machines you have.

Holidaymakers may be pleased to hear that Lynsey said you can put baseball caps in the dishwasher.

Lynsey also revealed that running a dishwasher is cheaper than using a washing machine and it can be useful for some things

She said: ‘Now I wouldn’t put this in your washing machine because running around it’s going to break the peak, but I’ve done this a couple of times on my social media and this does work.’

She also said that if you were to scrunch some tin foil and put it in the dishwasher with your metal cutlery, it would bring their shine back, however she admits that she didn’t know the science behind it.

Lynsey said that you should never put wooden cutlery such as wooden spoons or chopping boards in the machine, because the wood expands and can contract bacteria.

She also said that it’s not recommended to put garlic crushes or graters in the dishwasher because bits of congealed food could end up clogging up the holes.

Lynsey says you should always check your pots and pans to see if they are dishwasher safe.

But in terms of what else you can pop in the dishwasher for a thorough clean, the guru says that Duplo style Lego can be put in a safe wash bag and put in for a cycle.

Rubber ducks, flip flops, toothbrushes, tooth brush holders and brushes (as long as they are plastic) were also among the things you can put in a dishwasher.

Lynsey said her flip flops washed up ‘quite nicely’ in the dishwasher, but added there is one brand (which she could not mention) that you shouldn’t put in otherwise they would melt.

They then shared another bizarre video found online of someone who had unscrewed their toilet seat to put in their dishwasher, which left Lynsey equally as baffled.

She said: ‘I think this is completely unnecessary, I just think if you are cleaning your toilet properly why on earth would you do that and who has got the time to take their loo seat off and shove it in the dishwasher?

‘And who is going to put their plates after the loo seat has been in?’

She said that she uses a handheld steam cleaner and a lemon to sterilise her toilet seat.
