'Rasta for Rent': The dark side of Jamaican paradise Montego Bay

The dark side of paradise: Jamaican locals reveal wealthy visitors are desperate to ‘fulfil a fantasy’ of sleeping with ‘a Rasta’ – as a taxi driver says he was offered $800 to have sex with a tourist by her HUSBAND

  • EXCLUSIVE: Local men have spoken of sex trade in Jamaican holiday resorts
  • Jason, 31, was once offered $800 for an hour with a wealthy tourist’s wife
  • Locals cite poverty and a want to travel as reasons for the flourishing sex trade
  • They explain ‘white tourists’ have ‘fetish for the perfect black man to sleep with’

Every year thousands of British tourists flock to the Caribbean, lured in by white sands, clear seas and all inclusive deals at luxurious five-star resorts.

And Jamaica’s Montego Bay appears to have it all, from the liveliest nightlife on the island to historic properties offering guided tours about slavery.

However men living in the tourism capital have now revealed an open secret among their society – a lucrative male prostitution industry that sees locals cashing in on a ‘white fantasy’.

Speaking to FEMAIL, a number of locals explained how they would earn less than $500 per month working as a waiter – leaving them desperate to make money in  other ways.

And many said they feel British and American tourists are looking to fufil a ‘fantasy’ of sleeping with a ‘Rastaman like Bob Marley.’

Jason, 31, who now works as a taxi driver, previously spent eight years working within tourism. He said: ‘The most I’ve been offered for one hour is $800 from a white man who wanted me to sleep with his wife in front of him.’

Jason, 31, said he was once offered US$800 to spend the night with a white tourist’s wife when he worked in the hotel industry

While many of the workers claim they must ‘rely on tips’ if they are to enjoy any disposable income, some opt for more nefarious ways of making money, including  sex work.

Male prostitution, which sees large amounts of money changing hands for services rendered, offers some the financial compensation they are seeking.

Jason explained how he was propositioned by the husband of a tourist, saying: ‘I declined the offer, but I know plenty of people who have done it.

‘They can make more money than women can.’

Meanwhile Rad, 21, (pictured, left) said that men who offer themselves up for sex can live in the lap of luxury

‘Personally I don’t want to do it because I might catch feelings, even if something is meant to be for a night you can still form a connection you know?’

Jason revealed that he was regularly approached by female tourists, some twice his age, offering money if he shared their bed for the week, or in some cases just the night.

He said: ‘The oldest woman who approached me said she was 60, she offered me cash.’

Meanwhile he spoke about the motivation behind the sex work, adding: ‘Many female tourists have a fantasy about renting a black man for a week.

‘Some men who cannot have sex anymore want to watch their wives sleep with a black man who is younger than them.’

One local, who is known as Short Boss and sells marijuana on the beach, said tourists have a particular fantasy about men whose hair is styled into locs, and who are known as ‘Rastamen’.

Frankay, 37, (pictured left)  said he could ‘see why people sell themselves’ to live a more ‘comfortable’ life

He noted that tourists are willing to pay more for a more ‘authentic’ experience.

Short Boss spends his time weaving in and out of the populated resort beaches owned by private hotels.

While access is only permitted for those wearing a hotel wristband, many sellers swim under the barriers to hustle with the hordes of punters getting slowly tipsy in the scorching sun.

He explained how rich white men and women scour the terrain for men who look like ‘Bob Marley’, in a fetishised hunt for a local man who matches their preconceived notions of the Jamaican racial stereotype.

He said: ‘Women have an authentic fantasy of a Rastaman, with locs, to rent for the week, just for sex. Like Bob Marley or something. They will pay more.

‘Men want to see their woman have sex with a younger, more potent man – it turns them on, I don’t know why.

‘I know many people that do it, and they make good money. The cost of living here is high and when things in America go up, they also increase here. So people do what they have to do.’

Meanwhile another man, known as Rad said that men who offer themselves up for sex can live in the lap of luxury.

The 21-year-old said: ‘These men make a lot of money. You can see them with nice cars, designer clothes, all of the things that mean status.

‘I don’t have a car myself, and we rarely see a BMW around that is driven by a local.’

Another man, Frankay, who sells his home-made anklets on the beach for US$15 each, said that one day he would ‘like to go to England and watch Manchester United play’.

Another man, who gave his name as Short Boss, said tourists have a particular fantasy about men whose hair is styled into locs, and who are known as ‘Rastamen’

This is an ambition he says he shares with many Jamaicans, who have to be invited to the UK by a resident to secure a visa.

He explained: ‘A lot of people here don’t have money, and it’s a dream for so many of us to travel, especially to the UK.

‘I want to go to the England and see Manchester United play one day, but the cost of the ticket would be expensive, and I would need an invitation.

‘It’s not easy for us Jamaicans to leave the island and people are struggling to make money, especially outside of the tourist seasons.

‘I can see why a lot of men sell themselves, and they have a nice, comfortable life.

‘It’s dangerous here, there are a lot of scammers willing to make money from tourists by pretending to be in love, so at least… this is honest work in a way.’

When asked further about romance scams, Frankay admitted they are common among hotel staff, who chat up tourists by the poolside and create a relationship.

He said: ‘It happens in a lot of countries, and here is no exception.

‘You can see this sort of thing in hotels, staff will talk to visitors and create a relationship, then when the tourist gets home they will beg for help, say their car is stolen and such things.

‘Men who sleep with older women for sex, it’s usually agreed upfront, and the tourist will look for it. She wants the certain look like my friend here.’
