Review: 7 best body scrubs and exfoliators for soft smooth skin 2022: From Beauty Pie to Kate Somerville

We all know how important it is to regularly exfoliate our face – it helps to increase cell turnover and reveal a brighter, more radiant complexion. But how many of us frequently exfoliate using the best body scrubs?

Probably not that many, until things get so bad that we realise our shins are looking super scaly and need some serious TLC. It’s just as important to keep the skin below the neck healthy as it is our faces, and using a body scrub once or twice a week will do just that.

And there are more benefits to using a scrub than just smoother limbs – they also help ease dry skin conditions, reduce the likelihood of getting ingrown hairs after shaving, can improve circulation and make your fake tan sit more evenly. Here are the top picks according to the OK! beauty team and our Beauty Edit testers.

The best body scrubs to shop in 2022

Neom Great Day Body Scrub, £38 here

Beauty Edit tester Jolene says: “This product feels uber luxurious. I have quite dry skin on my legs and they looked so soft, glowing and polished afterwards. The oil left my skin feeling really silky and nourished. The mint and mandarin scent is amazing. This would make a great present for someone, too.” 5/5

Beauty Kin Exfoliating Body Bar, £9.95 here

Beauty Edit tester Maria says: “The feel against the skin can be a bit weird if you are used to shower gels, but this has the right level of grittiness to do its job and keep the skin soft and moisturised. I had noticed really dry and flaky skin in my legs before using it, and after a couple of weeks, it has really improved.” 5/5

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Resurfacing Body Scrub, £48 here

Beauty Edit tester Jayne: “This scrub means business and it delivers. Great lemony scent, spreads easily, makes skin feel baby soft. My legs are always dry and scaly but this certainly improved the look of them and kept them good for a few days. I like my skin to look smooth and youthful, and this product does that. It gives a lovely glow.” 5/5

Bloom and Blossom Scrubs Up Nicely, £14 here

Beauty Edit tester Julie says: “I like the fresh minty smell and gritty feel. The salt dissolves and leaves a sort of oil on your skin – I loved it! My skin felt lovely and soft afterwards, and my bumpy arms felt much softer to the touch. It scrubbed off old fake tan easily too.” 5/5

Frank Body Rosehip Scrub + Cleanser, £16.95 here

Beauty Edit tester Heidi says: “This has a light and subtle botanical scent, which I enjoyed. It had a perfect amount of scrub in the formula, as it’s invigorating but without being scratchy or harsh. My skin was visibly smoother and felt silky in seconds. This was an ideal prep product for my self tan.” 5/5

Beauty Pie Soul Providers Re-Energizing Dry Oil Sugar Scrub, £12.88 here (member’s price)

Beauty editor Laura says: "One of the few body scrubs I’ve tried where you really don’t need to moisturise afterwards – which, as someone who hates applying body creams, pleases me greatly. The fragrance of grapefruit and black pepper is zingy but won’t overpower your perfume." 5/5

& Other Stories Perle de Coco Body Scrub, £13 here

Laura says: "This has a thick, sticky consistency that makes it easy to really work into problem areas, and the fragrance is sweet but not sickly. There are shimmer particles in this scrub but they don’t really stay on the skin, instead just making your bath water look a bit more magical." 4/5

Body exfoliation tips

  • Sol de Janeiro advises focusing your scrub on the elbows, knees, shins and feet, even massaging right in between your toes.
  • Regularly exfoliating can help with skin conditions such as xerosis (dry skin), keratosis pilaris and breakouts on the body, explains Dr. Gary Goldfaden, founder of Goldfaden MD.
  • “You need to create an even base for tan but don’t scrub too hard,” says celebrity tanning guru James Harknett. “Self tan works with our top layer of dead skin, so if you have sloughed away at your body, your tan may not develop as dark as you had wished for. Do the exfoliation 24 hours before tanning.”
