Alexander Isak transfer news – next club odds: Newcastle favourites ahead of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Man Utd | The Sun

NEWCASTLE have been made favourites in the race to sign the young Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.

The signing has been priced at evens with Betfair for the Swede to make the move to St James' Park this summer, in what would be the club's record signing.

Isak joined Real Sociedad as a 19-year-old from Borussia Dortmund in 2019 for £14m.

The 22-year-old has scored 43 goals for the Spanish side in 128 games, including scoring seven goals in eight games on the way to delivering the club just their third ever Copa del Rey title and their first since 1987.

At the age of 17, the striker became the youngest ever goal scorer for Sweden, scoring the opening goal of a 6-0 friendly win over Slovakia in 2017.

The youngster's promising performances since moving to Spain has led to some of Europe's top clubs to reigniting their interest in the striker.

Newcastle currently lead the race to sign Isak, with Eddie Howe's side priced at evens to secure the signing this window.

Howe is looking to build a team with his new Saudi money that can challenge for European places this coming season, and has identified a new striker as a part of the puzzle.

Despite forking out £27m to sign Chris Wood in January, who has only scored twice for the Magpies, it's rumoured Howe could be about to blow the bank on Isak to be the club's new frontman.

Wood and Dwight Gayle have both struggled for goals and Callum Wilson has struggled to keep fit, and all three of them are now in their 30s, with Howe wanting a striker to rely on for years to come.

Arsenal have long been linked with the striker, and Betfair are pricing them as second in the race at 5/1.

The Gunners faced a shortage in strikers at the end of last season with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both with expiring contracts.

But Nketiah has since signed a new deal and Mikel Arteta has splashed£47m on Gabriel Jesus.

Real Madrid are also in the hunt, as they were when he signed for Borussia Dortmund as a 17-year-old, and are priced at 6/1.

Karim Benzema is 34 now and the European champions don't have a capable back-up striker, with Luka Jovic having left the club and Borja Mayoral and Mariano Diaz scoring a combined eight goals last season.

Manchester United are also linked at 8/1, following Cristiano Ronaldo's claims that he wants to leave the club. Erik ten Hag has since said to the press that the Portuguese remains a part of his plans and is not for sale.

Money strapped Barcelona are rumoured to be interested at 10/1, though are currently strongly linked to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
