      'It gives us an option'

Sanjay Bangar of PBKS said having an Indian seamer is of "immense value".

He added: “[Chris] Woakes covers two positions for us – Curran and Rabada. Having an Indian seamer is of immense value. Harshal bowls through the middle and death overs.

"It gives us an option of using Harshal [Patel] as an Impact Player. That was the thinking behind acquiring both Woakes and Harshal.”

'Each team decides to slice it differently'

Venky Mysore, managing director of Kolkata Knight Riders, has been telling ESPN more about the record signing of Mitchell Starc for 24.75 crore (£2.34m).

He said: "Well, you know, I think my take on this is if you sort of look at it from the set of lenses of a price you pay for a player. And now it seems like wow, 24.75.

"I was telling someone that the salary cap of a team when IPL started in 2008 was 20 crores, the entire salary cap. So things have changed, right? But, you know, I think our view is, when the auction is over, all the 10 teams are going to walk out of the auction having spent 100 crores and each team decides to slice it differently.

No one is a 'steal' at auction

GT’s director of cricket Vikram Solanki has been adding context to today's auction. He added: “I wouldn't call anybody a steal. That's disrespectful to that player to some extent.

"We value Omarzai and Umesh. You focus on skill sets [rather] than players at an auction. We got two players that we had in our pre-planning and we're looking forward to them joining us.”
