James Wade dashed back from tournament for son’s birth before heading Down Under

It’s not often I am delighted to be on double one, but I couldn’t be happier to announce that my wife Samantha and I have now got a second child in the Wade household. Our youngest son, Alfie, was born on Thursday and after some early worries, both mother and baby are now home safe and healthy.

It was a bit of a mad dash for me, as I was at the Players Championship events in Barnsley on Wednesday. While I was keen to focus on the job at hand, it is far easier said than done when your mind is hundreds of miles away worrying about your family.

With the benefit of hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have gone to Barnsley as my heart was at home with Samantha, but I have always wanted to give my all to the game and try to pick up ranking points wherever possible. It was just difficult to do myself justice.

Once home, my key focus has been on making sure Arthur is not feeling too left out with the new arrival. He has been the focus of all the attention up until this point and it must be a real shock to the system, especially with his mum being in hospital for a few days.

We did some father/son bonding when we went to collect his new puppy at the weekend and it was great spending the car journey with him and having that time together. The puppy is a bundle of energy (like Arthur), and I am sure they are going to be thick as thieves as they grow up together in the Wade household.

It is likely to be carnage in the early days, so it is probably just as well that I have left Samantha to deal with it and jetted off to Australia, which is where I am currently writing this column from. We are getting ready for the triple-header of Down Under events in the World Series and I feel confident that I am very close to finding my A-game again.

It was unfortunate that, after winning some Premier League nights and hitting career-high averages, a health scare caused me to put the game on the back burner for a short while, but I know that form is close again.

Will James Wade win a PDC major this year? Have your say in the comments section below.

I am looking forward to the trip and getting my first World Series title of the year, which would set me up for both the World Series Finals later in the month and the run of big events coming up later in the year.

I will get back from this trip, spend a bit of time with the family and then have a real determined focus on those events, which include the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam, the Players Championship and, of course, the World Championship.

There is still some work to be done to even qualify for them all, but I am confident that if my find my form then the rest will look after itself. Don’t forget to set your alarm clocks for the weekend as we are 12 hours in front of you so it will be breakfast darts for the keener viewers!

G’day! Wadey.
